Yes, the April 15th deadline is the early application deadline. There is a second deadline, October 15th, before which you may submit an application. However, students are required to demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English before graduation.

Only those students who are transferring from a Masters to the PhD degree or equivalent (i.e. a second year PhD student who has gone straight into the PhD program without doing a masters) should apply. In order for the PhD students to really benefit from the integrated MD/PhD Program, they should ideally enter the program before they have completed more than 1-2 years of their PhD program.

To be eligible for admission, you must have a BSc degree with first class standing (or equivalent), and have fulfilled all the requirements of acceptance into the four-year Medical Undergraduate Program of the Faculty of Medicine, and the doctoral requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The short answer is that our goal is to identify students with outstanding potential and help them get the training that they need to be accomplished independent physician-investigators. We want them to emerge from Penn ready to complete their training and go on to make substantial contributions in their chosen fields. A terminal masters degree (in which an M.A. or M.S. is the end result of training) used to be quite common in psychology and is still the norm in Canada, but increasingly, the trend in the United States has been for students to go directly from a bachelors degree to a doctorate. In social psychology, for example, masters degrees are far less common than PhDs.

Applications are accepted for fall admission only. Completed application and all accompanying materials must be received by February 1. Yes, GRE general test scores are required of every candidate. Only scores from tests taken within the last 5 years will be accepted. International students may request a GRE waiver if extreme hardship can be demonstrated. You need to submit a new application to the department. Since you are an "internal" applicant, your application does not need to be sent to the Graduate School and you do NOT have to pay a fee. Do NOT use the online system to apply since it will require payment. Simply print out the application form and complete it and submit it to the Graduate Program Coordinator at the department.

Because public health is a broad multi-disciplinary field, applicants to the Program come from a diverse range of undergraduate programs which include the medical and other physical sciences, social sciences, business sciences and clinical programs.

We receive over 100 applications for the program per year. Admission to the M.P.H. program is competitive. Persons holding evidence of strong academic performance in a relevant discipline and those with backgrounds and knowledge regarding the U.S. public health system are preferred. No, an M.A. degree is not required. Most students apply directly to a doctoral program. But see the question above, "What job opportunities are available with an M.A.?" Yes. However, the admissions committee will expect that you have had an introductory course in psychology, a course in statistics, and a course in research methods (or similar courses).

Yes. In fact the majority of first-year students in the PhD program do not enter the program with a Masters Degree in art history. Having an MA does not automatically increase or decrease an applicant's chances for admission. In the first year of this sequential program students without an MA in art history earn the Masters degree and then continue to two more years of coursework.
