Well, apple snails can be very inactive for days (see answer above this one) and if they have a lot of air in their lung, they float (sounds logical isn't it?). Floating of an apple snail doesn't indicate that there is something wrong or that he/she is dead. To check if the snail is alive, take it out of the water and see if you can get it moving by touching the shell door.

It is not uncommon to find the occasional dead fish floating in our waterways. Fish that have been caught by anglers, then released, may have been over-stressed, and die. Also, fluctuating water levels can destroy the habitat of smaller fish, causing them to die. Since many fish live in weeds, when the weeds die, their decomposing robs the water of oxygen, again leading to the death of smaller fish. This is probably the biggest cause. Not to forget the enormous army of bacteria and other micro-organisms that is heading towards the dead snail and helps to decompose it quickly. Ingestion of the shell is odd but may signify a lack in calcium thus the snail is satisfing it's needs by absorbing it's own reserve. and I always wondered if another reason they do it may be to smooth rough edges on the shell that are irritating them, but that's just a theory :) Whatever the reason, unless it's very excessive, they never seem to do much damage.
