A positive result will always be indicated by the presence of a distinct color band in the 'test' region of the pregnancy test strip or midstream test (accompanied by the presence of the 'control' band). If the test is faint (in comparison to the control band), the test may be positive, though the presence of hCG in the woman's body - or urine sample - may be low. The presence of hCG doubles every two days in a pregnant woman.

To prevent group B strep bacteria from being passed to the newborn, pregnant women who carry group B strep should be given antibiotics through the vein (IV) at the time of labor or when their water breaks.

In order to test positive on a home pregnancy test, there must be hCG present in your blood stream. hCG production starts at an early stage of development, just a few days after conception, before implantation in the uterus, but you will not be able to read until after implantation. hCG enters the circulation almost immediately after implantation of the embryo (blastocyst) on about 7 days past ovulation, producing 5mIU-50mIU of hCG and doubles every two days.

About 25-30% of pregnant women experience some type of spotting or bleeding in early pregnancy. This can be a result of many different factors including implantation bleeding, infection, cervical irritation, ectopic pregnancy or a threatened miscarriage. Many women who have this light bleeding go on to have normal pregnancies and healthy babies. About half of the women who experience some light bleeding will go on to have heavier bleeding that will ultimately result in miscarriage.

The pregnancy tests that are available at the drugstores are very sensitive. By the time a woman has missed her period, if she is pregnant, it will be positive. If she has a delayed period for another reason, it will be negative. If a woman misses two periods in a row, she should consider redoing a pregnancy test and/or seeing a doctor for a more sensitive blood test to rule out pregnancy.

Taking a home pregnancy test is simple - though instructions must be followed precisely for both test strips and midstream tests. For test strips, immerse the strip into the urine sample with the arrow end pointing towards the urine. Do not immerse past the MAX (Marker Line). Take the strip out after 3 seconds and lay the strip flat on a clean, dry, non-absorbent surface. Next, wait for colored bands to appear.

The shade of red in the test region will vary, but it should be considered negative wherever there is even a faint pink line.

This usually results from less than ideal amplification in the last round. If you infect 293 cells at too low titer (e.g. no obvious cell lysis after 4-5 days) or too high titer (e.g. cells lysed too soon, like less than 2 days), both will produce a faint band or no band on CsCl gradient preparations.

It is possible to get a false positive test result. This happens when a doctor or laboratory has not performed a confirmatory antibody test before giving people their results. When a person has an antibody test, the lab usually runs two different kinds of tests. One is called an EIA test which is highly sensitive. It can sometimes overreact, so a positive result with the EIA is usually followed up with a RIBA test which is a sophisticated, highly-specific, antibody test.

To increase the chance of conception, it is best to have intercourse the day of the LH surge as well as following three days after. A faint line (or a faint positive test band) does not indicate a positive result for an LH surge. While the presence of a faint line on a pregnancy test may indicate a positive result, a faint line on an OPK is always negative.
