Can a dimmer be used with halogen lamps?

Frequently Asked Questions - Arevco Lighting
You can use a dimmer with a halogen lamps but some low voltage halogen lamps require a special dimmer. Particles from the filament in a halogen bulb will cycle from the filament to the inside of the quartz envelope and back while in operation. Halogen bulbs used on a dimmer will last longer if they are set to full "ON" for two minutes before being turned off — this helps the particles from the filament complete their cycle. What materials are used in halogen lamps?

FAQs - Support
There are two kinds of bulbs used in halogen lamps: transparent and translucent quartz bulbs. Materials inside the halogen lamp include tungsten filament, molybdenum foil, and filling gases consisting of a combination of Nitrogen (N2), Argon (AR), Krypton (Kr) and a small amount of halogen gas made up of iodine (I), bromine (Br), chlorine (Cl), and fluorine (F). The base of the lamp is usually made of steatite or heat-resistant metal. See similar questions...

Can fluorescent lamps be put on a dimmer?

FAQs: Fluorescent: GE Commercial Lighting Products
Yes, only if the fluorescent light is using a dimmable ballast. Any time a dimmable ballast is used, a compatible dimming switch needs to be installed. The ballast manufacturer can provide a list of compatible switches. See similar questions...

What is the coating used on infrared halogen PAR lamps?

FAQs: Halogen: GE Commercial Lighting Products
The coating used on infrared halogen PAR lamps is made from tantala and silica. It is applied only to the outside of the bulb. See similar questions...

Why do some halogen lamps last longer than a regular incandescent lamp?

Litetronics International - Frequently Asked Questions
Both regular incandescent bulbs and halogen bulbs create light by heating a tungsten filament. Usually, the bulb burns out when the filament is fully depleted. The filament on a regular incandescent bulb burns out over time because the tungsten on the filament evaporates and is redeposited on the bulb's glass. (Those tungsten deposits are the reason bulbs often appear darker when they burn out. See similar questions...

Are halogen lamps permitted?

Residential Life
Halogen lamps are considered a fire hazard so they are not allowed in the residence halls. For the same reason, students are not allowed to have candles in their rooms. See similar questions...

What is the big deal with halogen lamps?

Carley Lamps - "Light Years Ahead"
A Halogen Lamp is a Gas Filled Llamp using Argon, Krypton or Xenon which has a small amount of Halogen gas inside of it. The Halogen gas acts as a "Cleaning Solution" inside of the lamp. This keeps the inside of the lamp clean enabling all of the light the filament produces to shine out of the lamp. A Dirty Lamp traps some of the filament's light inside of the lamp itself. The addition of the Halogen gas is an extra step in producing the lamp. See similar questions...

Can't we improve halogen lamps?

HID-Online.com
The limits of the halogen technology was reached with the introduction of the PREMIUM lamp. This lamp offer 30% more light on the road ahead compared to a standard lamp. The only way for further improvements was via a new technology. The gas discharge lamp proved the answer. See similar questions...

Why should I not use halogen lamps?

Home Safety FAQ
Halogen desk and floor lamps are fire risks. They should be replaced with lamps that use cooler burning and more efficient fluorescent bulbs. See similar questions...

Can your lamps be used in wash down areas?

What is the benefit of Halogen lamps over incandescent lamps?

Teklight Halogen Bulb FAQ's
As a result of grain boundary etching and the development of porosity due to tungsten evaporation (near the end of life, a cross-section of the filament resembles Swiss cheese) within the filament, the resistance increases during life so the current decreases at constant volts. However, the current decrease is not substantial. Light output over life will depend upon both operating wattage and any bulb blackening caused by tungsten deposits on the bulb wall. How much heat is emitted by incandescent, halogen, and compact fluorescent lamps?

Litetronics International - Frequently Asked Questions
Incandescent lamps create light by heating a filament inside the bulb; the heat makes the filament white-hot, producing the light that you see. Halogen lamps create light through the same method. Because incandescent and halogen bulbs create light through heat, about 90% of the energy used is wasted to generate heat. To reduce the heat emitted by regular incandescent and halogen lamps, use a lower watt lamp (like 60 watts instead of 100). See similar questions...

If that's the case, then what are the inner lamps in the headlight assembly used for?

Volkswagen Touareg Frequently-Asked Questions
In Touaregs equipped with Xenon lamps, the inner lamps in the headlight assembly are traditional high-beam halogen lamps, however these are only used for the "flash to pass" function, which is activated by pulling back on the headlight lever on the steeri ng column. Volkswagen decided to put these additional halogen lamps on Xenon-equipped Touaregs because rapidly turning Xenon lamps on and off during the "flash to pass" function significantly reduces the lifespan of the lamp. CAN A DIMMER BE USED ON THE TRANSFORMER?

Yes. Dimming is done on the primary side and a low voltage dimmer will only work. The important thing to note is that if you are using a magnetic transformer, you must use a magnetic dimmer and if you are using an electronic transformer, you must use an electronic dimmer. If you do not, there may be some humming and flickering of the lights, it will not work at all and you could damage the dimmer. See similar questions...

How do halogen lamps give constant light output?

FAQs - Support
The halogen cycle effectively prevents blackening f the bulb wall so that there is no reduction of light output or color temperature. See similar questions...

The halogen lights only take 20w or 40w lamps. Can I put in more powerful ones?

Your Light Source
The short answer to this is, "you don't need to". Halogen lamps are much more powerful than conventional bulbs and so the wattage you need is less. 20w and 40w halogen lamps kick out as much light as their equivalent 60w friends with conventional bulbs. This is coupled with the fact that many have glass or crystal diffusers which spread the light. Because the halogen lights give out more light for the same wattage, you also save energy... and the bulbs last much longer. See similar questions...

Are H4, H3, H1, H7, HB3, HB4... halogen lamps interchangeable?

Can't I just replace the stock Halogen bulbs with Xenon lamps?

Sylvania Headlights & Blue Euro Lights FAQs
No. Standard 12V automotive power sources are incompatible with the HID light source. The standard halogen bulbs run at 12V, while HID lamps run at approximately 25000V and require several amps to start up. The additional hardware that comes with the kit is needed to convert your car's 12V power source to drive the HID system. The connector is also totally different from any automotive halogen bulb connector. Yes and no. See similar questions...

Do the HID lamps need to be modified to fit the Halogen headlight housings?

Sylvania Headlights & Blue Euro Lights FAQs
If you are doing a conversion for a 9006 setup using the custom fabricated beam pattern correct kit, then no modifications to the HID lamp is needed to make it fit. Some headlamp housings where the 9006 bulb is held in by a clip may require the removal of a small tab on the inner edge of where the bulb enters the housing. This can be done using a file, but care must be taken not to allow any particles or dust to enter the headlamp housing. See similar questions...

I can't see a thing in my apartment because it's dark. Are halogen lamps really banned???

Afraid so. Halogen lamps have been implicated in a couple of campus fires in Undergrad Land, so they have been banned campus-wide in a compassionate effort to keep grad students safe, though in the dark. or any other picky questions about size. Some of you out there think size matters enormously, but we all know that what you do with what you have is far more important than actual inches or centimeters. See similar questions...
