The important thing to note is that if you are using a magnetic transformer, you must use a magnetic dimmer and if you are using an electronic transformer, you must use an electronic dimmer. The short answer to this is, "you don't need to". Halogen lamps are much more powerful than conventional bulbs and so the wattage you need is less. 20w and 40w halogen lamps kick out as much light as their equivalent 60w friends with conventional bulbs. This is coupled with the fact that many have glass or crystal diffusers which spread the light.
