Generally it is advisable to wait one or two years after the death of a spouse before entering the seminary. This provides opportunity for grieving, transition and preparing oneself to enter a new, celibate state of life.

When a worker entitled to Social Security benefits dies, the surviving spouse, age 60 or older, may qualify for survivor benefits. A surviving spouse, age 50 or older, may qualify only if disabled.

A widower's/widow's pension is 50% of the pension the deceased insured person was receiving or would have received. However, no widower/widow shall receive less than $150.15 per month.

Where a spouse has died, proof of death of the spouse must be provided if death occurred outside of the Province of Ontario.

A widower/widow shall receive survivor's benefit as follows, except where the marriage took place after the insured person started receiving pension: A widow who at the time of her husband's death was fifty years or older and been married for not less than three years shall receive a pension for life or a grant. A widow who was an invalid at the time of her husband's death, regardless of her age, shall receive a pension until the invalidity ceases, or a grant.

This exemption is equal to $1,000 assessed value, and applies to either widows or widowers who are residents of the State of Nevada and is in the amount of $1,000 assessed value. To receive this exemption widows must bring a copy of their spouse's death certificate to the Assessor's office when initially applying for the exemption, and sign an affidavit stating they are a bona fide resident of the State of Nevada.
