This is because there are no SATA HD drivers in Windows XP/2K/NT and you need to load 3rd party drivers (just like with many SCSI drives).

We do not support using the drive connected via an ATA card. Please connect the drive using an IDE connector on the motherboard. In addition, some motherboards have four IDE connectors rather than two. In that case, we would recommend connecting the drive using IDE-1 or IDE-2. A12. Serial ATA is an evolutionary replacement for the Parallel ATA physical storage interface and will allow future enhancements to the computing platform. Specifically, the thinner Serial ATA cable addresses OEM's concerns regarding airflow around the Parallel ATA cable and enables design of smaller PC chassis, as well as silicon vendors concerns regarding 5-volt tolerance support in future designs.
