How do I install Windows XP on a Serial ATA (SATA) drive?

Hardware Knowledgebase - How do I install Windows XP on a Se...
If you are installing Windows XP on a system where you only have Serial ATA Drives you might encounter a problem where Windows does not seem to detect your Hard Drive and reports "No mass storage device found" during an installation (this occurs in Windows NT and Windows 2000 as well). This is because there are no SATA HD drivers in Windows XP/2K/NT and you need to load 3rd party drivers (just like with many SCSI drives).

What is Serial ATA (SATA)?

PCICASE GROUP -- CASES AND STORAGE PROFESSIONAL
Serial ATA is the latest standard in IDE(Atapi) devices. The maximum speed of Serial ATA is 150MB/s (the maximum speed of Parallel ATA is 133MB/s, the ATA133 standard). The cable for serial ATA has a minimum of 4 wires (extra ground wires can be applied), a 7-pin connectro and a maximum length of 1metre (about 3.1 feet). Because of the serial protocol only 1 device can be connected to each cable. See similar questions...

Q3: When should SAS be used instead of Serial ATA (SATA)?

welcome
A3: SAS will be used in the same environments in which SCSI and Fibre Channel are employed today. SAS is designed to be used in high availability, enterprise environments where maximum random performance is required. SATA on the other hand is optimized for sequential I/O operations where the requirement is to transfer large sequential blocks of data to and from a drive. See similar questions...

Can the Tempo SATA cards co-exist with other manufacturers' Serial ATA cards?

Sonnet - Support
Yes, however, some other manufacturers' drivers may incorrectly assume a PCI-X Sonnet card is another SATA card; kernel panics may occur; the PCIe cards are not suspect to this problem. See similar questions...

Q6. How much faster is Serial ATA (SATA II) than Firewire and Hi-Speed USB?

welcome
Because SATA II is nearly four times faster than Firewire and over six times faster than USB, it is the ideal interface for audio and video editing applications, high-end graphics, and all your other capacity hungry applications that demand continuous high performance throughput. A7. When an external drive without RAID fails, all data is lost. Without RAID a failed drive can mean the loss of hours of irreplaceable creative output. See similar questions...

How do I find the serial number of my hard drive?

Support – FAQs – Warranty FAQ
The serial number location can vary depending on the drive series. The serial number is usually on the hard drive label or located on the front edge of the drive (the opposite edge of the connectors) on a bar code sticker. It is typically eight characters long and may appear as four characters on top of four other characters. See similar questions...

How do I connect your wireless system to my computer if my computer does not have a serial port?

GageWay Wireless System FAQs
If your computer does not have a serial port, it should have multiple USB ports. Connection to the computer is via the serial to USB cable included with the MiniStation (GWS-MINI-U). This is a common perception that is definitely incorrect. When you use a serial to USB cable, you also install drivers to make that USB connection look like a standard RS232 port within your computer. Your application software will be looking for a serial port (COM1, COM2, etc.) for data input. See similar questions...

What is Serial ATA?

Serial ATA - Frequently Asked Questions
Serial ATA is a disk-interface technology developed by a group of the industry's leading vendors to replace parallel ATA. The group known as the Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO) owns the development of the Serial ATA technology and maintenance of its specifications. Scalability - Serial ATA is a point-to-point connection and allows multiple ports to be aggregated into a single controller that is typically located either on the motherboard or as an add-in, RAID card. How do I install Windows XP on an SATA hard drive?

Logic Supply - Frequently Asked Questions
Microsoft does not provide installation/driver support for SATA hard drives in Windows XP. However, there are workarounds for Windows installs. The first two methods assume you have either a spare floppy or IDE drive to use temporarily. If this is not possible, you'll need to slipstream the drivers (see below). Copy the SATA drivers to a floppy disk (these can usually be found on your mainboard support disk. Usually these consist of PIDE/SATA Folders and TXTsetup.oem files. See similar questions...

Hardware Knowledgebase - Top Rated FAQs
EIDE, SCSI, or Serial ATA (SATA) drive is not recognized during the installation of Windows NT/2000/XP. The installer reports that there is no drive present for the Windows installation, even though the controller recognizes the drive. The drive may not be detected during the installation of Windows because you have not yet loaded the drivers for your EIDE, SCSI, or SATA controller. See similar questions...

How do I connect a GPS receiver with a serial port to my USB port?

MotionBased | Support | Help Center
Many new PCs (especially laptops) have USB ports but do not have the standard 9-pin serial ports found on older computers. This presents a problem because most of the GPS manufacturers don't make data cables that terminate with USB plugs. Unfortunately, we have noticed that the USB-Serial converters often cause computer crashes. We are working hard to resolve this problem. See similar questions...

Products&Solutions | FAQ for all DVD/CD Drive Models | R...
We do not support using the drive connected via an ATA card. Please connect the drive using an IDE connector on the motherboard. In addition, some motherboards have four IDE connectors rather than two. In that case, we would recommend connecting the drive using IDE-1 or IDE-2. For details consult the manual or the manufacturer. See similar questions...

Q12. Hard disk data rates have been growing ever two years. Why is Serial ATA being planned now?

welcome
A12. Serial ATA is an evolutionary replacement for the Parallel ATA physical storage interface and will allow future enhancements to the computing platform. Specifically, the thinner Serial ATA cable addresses OEM's concerns regarding airflow around the Parallel ATA cable and enables design of smaller PC chassis, as well as silicon vendors concerns regarding 5-volt tolerance support in future designs. Can I hot-swap a disk drive that is attached to any Sonnet Tempo Serial ATA card?

Sonnet - Support
Yes, but it depends on the operating system (Mac OS or Windows) used. Sonnet Tempo Serial ATA PCI, PCI-X, and PCIe (PCI Express) cards only support drive hot swapping when used in Mac computers running Mac OS. SATA drive hot swapping is not supported in a desktop or server PC running Windows XP, Server 2003 or Vista.
