The choice over whether to divide large plants really depends on your growing goals and situation. You may wish to grow the plant into a larger 'specimen plant' that will produce larger and more flowers reliably, or you may want to produce divisions for trade or sale if the plant is in demand. Because most of our plants 'work by producing seed, we are very hesitant to divide them unless they fall apart at a division point when they are repotted.

In this area tomatoes and other warm season vegetables are planted in the spring (March) and fall (September). For a complete listing of vegetable varieties and their planting dates request publication SP 103 from your local Cooperative Extension Service.

Autumn and spring are much the best times for planting trees, shrubs, roses and herbaceous perennials when the ground is moist but not saturated. Ensure that the root ball of plants have been well soaked with water prior to planting. Make sure that the plants receive a good supply of water throughout their first year and water well in subsequent years during periods of drought. Evergreens should be planted in the early spring when the ground is still damp.

In either early Spring or throughout the Fall. The reason is that the soil temperature is low and the tree's roots can easily acclimate to the new soil where it will live for the rest of its life without stress. It takes about 30-45 days for a tree to root-in and begin living on its own without the additional care required to sustain its life. If a drought would occur, a minimum of 25 gallons or 1" of water would be required per tree per week to keep them alive.

The ideal time to plant trees is during the trees' dormant season, after leaf drop in the fall and before bud break in the spring.

Basically, you can plant bamboo any time you can work the soil. We have done most of our planting from November through March; however, we have planted in every month of the year with success.

Potted citrus trees can be planted almost anytime of the year. Fall and Spring are two of the better times. Since newly planted citrus trees are not as cold hardy as more mature ones, Fall planting should be done at least two (2) months before freezing temperatures can be expected.

Clyde Robin. In temperate zones, it is best to plant in the fall just prior to the first rains. In areas that get hard winter freezes it is best to wait until the spring and after danger of heavy frost has passed. .

Spring and fall are excellent times to plant grass seed. For Kentucky bluegrass, temperatures should be around 80 degrees F. For details on how to plant grass seed, see our How To section.

Palm trees like to be transplanted when they are actively growing. Spring and summer are best but some varieties can be planted all year.

June is a great month to plant trees, shrubs and groundcovers. Pay close attention to their watering requirements because their root systems will be in the original soil ball of the plant for the first several months. Note that these plants may require an occasional hand watering until they begin to establish.

Most trees and shrubs do best when transplanted in the spring or fall, however I have found that with proper care you can transplant most pants just about any time. One more note about planting, a plant can be put in the ground any time of year as long as the ground is not frozen. It is the act of cutting the roots of a plant that is can kill it. A plant purchased at the nursury has already been transplanted and can be put in the ground any time as long as it gets watered.

Anytime! As long as you can be sure the tree will be properly watered, you may plant a container-grown maple tree (all our trees are container grown) any month of the year.

Cannas should be planted in the Spring after danger of hard freezing has passed.They, like the glads, are not cold-hardy.

The best time to plant gladiolus is in the Spring when danger of hard freezing has passed. If you live in the deep south, you can plant almost anytime. They are not cold-hardy. While a bigger bulb will most likely produce a bigger flower, it does not necessarily mean a better flower. The bulb of a smaller species will produce a smaller plant, but the quality may be equal, if not better than a bulb of a larger species.

Start with what you like. If you like oranges pick a naval, blood, or Valencia. If you like grapefruit pick the white Marsh or a pink Ruby. What you really need to consider is where your citrus is going to be grown. Some are more susceptible to frost damage than others. And although there is always talk about covering citrus trees to get them through the cold nights of winter it's a lot of work.
