They can live quite happily, through the coldest winter, if they have an insulated coop or a light inside their coop. The smaller the coop, the easier it is for them to keep it warm. Birds can get frostbite. Birds with large combs tend to be more susceptible. Also, some breeds are just hardier than others.

Bluebirds in the Lower Willamette Valley do not migrate south for the winter. They tend to join small flocks and forage on insects and dried berries. The will move to lower elevations if the winter is very cold. Sometimes they will roost over night in a nest box during the bitterest weather.

Winter thunderstorms are rare because the air is more stable – strong updrafts cannot form because the surface temperatures during the winter are colder.

You can compost all year long, but be aware the decomposition rate will slow down as temperatures drop. The process rate will accelerate come spring. Another option is stockpiling your winter organics in a covered container stored outside, with the intent of adding them to your compost bin or compost tumbler in the spring.

It is not a good idea to leave a small poodle outside for long periods of time, but they can handle cold temperatures for short amounts of time (i.e., to use the bathroom).

Hiking mountain trails in the winter is not recommended. Trail markers and icy patches are obscured by drifting snow, creating very dangerous conditions for hikers. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are popular when there is sufficient snow. Cross-country skis, snowshoes, and ice skates can be rented in Bar Harbor. There are no snowmobile rentals on the island.
