What is the difference between bifocals and varifocals?

Frequently Asked Questions - Jack Brown Eyecare
Bifocals are basically lenses which have two sections with different focuses. Generally they have distance vision in the top half and near vision in the bottom half but they can also be used for intermediate and near vision. The bottom half of the lens comes in different shapes or segments for example round shaped or flat at the top and even right across the lens, this is called an executive bifocal.

Bifocals are lenses that have two parts - the upper part is used for distance vision, and the lower part is used for such close vision tasks as reading or sewing. A multifocal lens typically uses the center of the lens for distance and the edge for near. The MVP is actually a multifocal contact lens, but often gets called a bifocal as do many other multifocal contact lenses. See similar questions...

The first time any spectacles are worn some adjustment time is required mainly because the new, clear vision needs to be accepted by your brain. Once it has learnt to recognise the images seen through the spectacles and become familiar with them, the initial "WOW" effect should have worn off. Varifocals are slightly trickier than single focal specs since they change in power as the eyes look from the top to the bottom of the lenses. See similar questions...
