What is Widescreen?

DVD Video Planet - Dvd-video Faq
A good number of people are under the impression that the WIDESCREEN format is merely designed to create an illusion of the cinematic experience enabled by the placement of black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. Viewers will find themselves with a significantly smaller presentation of the film, giving the impression that the black bars on the screen cover up the top and bottom portions of the original image, therefore cheating the viewer for the sake of a cinematic presentation.

What are Widescreen Weddings?

Wedding Videos by Jason Magbanua
The Widescreen wedding coverage is the greatest thing to happen to weddings since the garter ceremony. Our acquisition of the latest HDV widescreen cameras enable us to shoot your special day in all it's cinematic glory. Like the movies you watch, your video is panoramic (16:9). It will take advantage of the Plasma or LCD screen you're asking your parents to give you on your wedding day.

What is letterbox widescreen?

PlayUSA.com: DVDs
Letterbox widescreen (sometimes referred to as LBX) is a method of preserving the rectangular image of a widescreen presentation. Unfortunately, letterboxed presentations (depending on the aspect ratio) do not always reach the sides (left and right) of viewable screen on a widescreen TV set, prompting the need for viewers to use the 16:9 or ?Zoom? feature of their DVD player or TV to expand the image causing a loss of resolution. This issue relates only to widescreen TVs.

What is anamorphic widescreen?

PlayUSA.com: DVDs
Anamorphic enhancement is a process for widescreen TVs where the original image is compressed by 33% in the vertical axis during encoding. When the player decodes the image, the vertical axis is decompressed giving a higher resolution and greater clarity. Anamorphically enhanced DVDs can be viewed just as easily on fullscreen TVs as widescreen ones although the process is usually not discernible.

What about widescreen resolutions?

The Supernatural Olympics - FAQ
Although I could add widescreen resolutions, I have no such monitors available to really test it with, let alone knowing the actual resolutions involving widescreen (short of 16:9 aspect ratio, the easy part). I can, however, mathematically calculate everything and go from there, but I'm not going to be able to accurately test it. Without knowing the standard widescreen resolutions, incompatibilities may pose problems.

Which DVDs have widescreen?

Our DVDs are either widescreen or fullscreen format. Check each DVD's description page for more details. If it isn't specified there, please check back to the pages as we update them each week.

Should we shoot in HD? Should we shoot in widescreen? Should we use surround sound?

The 48 Hour Film Project: Frequently Asked Questions
Your film will be shown in Standard Definition in stereo or mono with an aspect ratio of 4:3. So you may shoot in HD, in widescreen, or in surround sound, but the film will not be projected that way. We require you to submit a Standard Definition, letterboxed, stereo or mono version of your film—anything else can lead to problems during our mastering process.

Why are both sides fullscreen when one side is supposed to be widescreen?

Hier finden Sie die aktuellen Infos zur DVD Technologie
Many DVD's are labeled as having widescreen (16:9) format video on one side and standard (4:3) on the other. If you think both sides are the same, you're probably seeing uncompressed 16:9 on the widescreen side. It seems to be 4:3 pan & scan, but if you look carefully you'll discover that the picture is horizontally compressed. The problem is that your player has been set for a widescreen TV. See 1.22 for details.

What's widescreen? How do the aspect ratios work?

Disney DVD Technical Support
Video can be stored on a DVD in 4:3 format (standard TV shape) or 16:9 (widescreen). The width-to-height ratio of standard televisions is 4 to 3; in other words, 1.33 times wider than high. New widescreen televisions, specifically those designed for HDTV, have a ratio of 16 to 9, that is, 1.78 times wider than high. DVD is specially designed to support widescreen displays.

Why is the widescreen version making things look too skinny?

Disney DVD Technical Support

Why are most DVDs produced in Widescreen?

DVD Video Planet - Dvd-video Faq
The Widescreen format sits best with the DVD format as it comes closest to recreating the cinema experience in your home. With the panning and scanning process, up to 1/3 of the original film image can be lost. With Widescreen you are seeing more of the film not less! The Widescreen presentation lets you enjoy the COMPLETE movie (on a standard TV) as the director intended.

Why can I still see black bars on my widescreen TV?

PlayUSA.com: DVDs
Widescreen TVs have an aspect ratio of 1.77:1; the same ratio can be expressed as 16:9. Widescreen presentations with aspect ratios higher than this (i.e. 1.85:1 or 2.35:1, for example) will still exhibit black bars at the top and bottom despite these being much less than those on a standard 4:3 ?square? TV set.
