Stainless steel is the standard material for a Muzzy exhaust system. In most cases a stainless steel system weighs about 12 pounds. The optional material, titanium weighs a little over half as much as steel yet is stronger. The average weight of a titanium system is about 7.5 pounds. For comparison, stock systems can weight from 20 to 35 pounds. Generally the design is the same for both the titanium or stainless steel, so the power output is the same as well.

Go for what you like best. The titanium is much lighter than the stainless steel, but it also scratches somewhat more easily. Passivation is the treatment of stainless steel in a nitric acid or citric acid solution to remove iron contamination on the surface. The contamination is from fabrication such as stamping, drilling, machining, welding, cutting, forming or wire brushing. Passivation does not change the appearance of the stainless. Both stainless steel and titanium are corrosion resistant and do not normally need special care. If they do get dusty, simply wash it with tap water, or if necessary, soak it in soap water for a while then cleanse it. DO NOT use brush especially on glossy finish or gold plated finish. We use Aerospace grade titanium on the spring/lock side liner. Titanium is the perfect material for that function and has all of the properties needed to perform the duties of a strong reliable locking liner system. The opposite side (non-lock side) is crafted from a 300 series stainless steel. This side of the knife functions as a handle frame stiffener and has a minimal mechanical function. There is no right answer regarding rod materials. Each cleaning rod has its own merits and tends to be a personal preference. Stainless is extremely strong and rigid and offers a smooth, ground finish. Brass is softer material and it is usually less abrasive if wiped cleaned during regular use. Ceramic is generally thought to contain heat better than regular steel, thus keeping the hot gases moving through the exhaust system faster. However, a chip or abuse of the header may result in chips in the protective coating, exposing the steel underneath to water and corrosion which may lead to rust. Both materials have the same performance characteristics. The main differences (besides price) are in, corrosion resistance, and appearance. Aluminized steel exhausts are inexpensive, but tend to corrode much more quickly than stainless steel. Aluminized steel is best suited to vehicles in warm, dry climates, where they won't be exposed to rain, snow, or salt. Even then aluminized system rust out from the inside due to condensation. This is not a skill everyone can acquire. Thin stainless can be spot-welded which is suitable for the combustion chamber and case. The NGV assembly will require MIG or TIG welding. TIG sets are expensive and it may be necessary to find a specialist welder used to welding stainless steel to do the welding for you.
