Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or above. Applicants between 2.75 and 3.0 may be considered for provisional admittance. This is dependent on the institution where the student received their degree.

The minimum TOEFL score required by U.C. Berkeley for graduate admission is 570 on the paper and pencil test, 230 on the computer based test and 68 on the Next Generation TOEFL (iBT). Applicants with a score below this will not be admitted.

Because we are looking for the most outstanding candidates to fill critical need teaching positions, we are looking for people with exemplary academic and professional experience. We do not take the GPA into consideration. With many different scales being used throughout the country, plus the inability to claim that a GPA means the same thing from one school to another, there is no solid measure upon which it can be determined what a “good GPA” might be.

Entering students normally are expected to have completed the B.S. degree requirements with at least a 3.0 grade-point average in all coursework taken in the junior and senior years of undergraduate study. Students entering the Ph.D. program are expected to have completed the requirements for the master's degree with at least a 3.25 grade-point average, and to have demonstrated creative ability. Admission to the UCLA Electrical Engineering Department is quite competitive.
