The lands encompassing the Tahoe National Forest were first set aside in 1891 by President Benjamin Harrison as part of the four million acre "Sierra Forest Reserve", which stretched from Yosemite National Park northward. In 1899, President William McKinley created the "Lake Tahoe Forest Reserve", a 136,335 acre portion of the Sierra Reserve, as a "forestry reserve and public park.

Most commercial activities on the national forest require a permit (e.g., fishing tournaments, boat rentals, trail rides). The Daniel Boone National Forest system lands occur in 21 counties of eastern Kentucky, consisting of over 706,000 acres within a 2.1 million-acre proclamation boundary. The northern tip of the forest occurs near Morehead, KY and runs south to the Tennessee state line.

Tree stands are legal as long as you don’t leave them in the forest unattended and you don’t damage the tree. Tree stands need to be portable and removed when not in use. You cannot put nails or screws in a tree, or remove limbs, without causing damage to the tree. There are tree stands on the market that meet these requirements.

The California Department of Fish and Game regulates hunting and fishing on Inyo National Forest lands. Check with their office in Bishop at 760-872-1171 or look on the CA DFG website at http://www.dfg.ca.gov/. Most streams and lakes on the Inyo National Forest are open for fishing from the last weekend in April through the end of October each year. Some waters in southern Inyo County open in early March.

Hunting is allowed on National Forest lands, however, discharge of firearms or any other implement capable of taking human life, causing injury, or damaging property is prohibited within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site or occupied area, or into or within a cave.

There are numerous shooting ranges scattered throughout the state. Some ranges are private and to shoot you must be a member or guest of a member. However, there are also many public places to shoot. Local sporting goods dealers or G&F offices may be able to advise of nearby ranges or shooting areas. If shooting on public lands, make sure adequate precautions are taken with regard to a safe backstop and that the shooting takes place in areas away from picnic areas and campgrounds.

The Forest Service "Plant-A-Tree" Program permits individuals and groups to donate money for planting trees on National Forests. The trees may be planted to memorialize loved ones or to commemorate special events such as births, weddings, or anniversaries. For a suggested minimum donation of $10, which pays for 10-15 seedlings, donors receive a certificate acknowledging their gift. If desired, the name of the person in whose honor the donation is made will appear on the certificate.

Yes. The Forest Service and the Navy have an agreement for the use of the Pinecastle bombing range. This range was established by the Army Air Corps in 1943 and has been in continuous use by the United States Navy since the early 1950’s to train aircrews and support personnel.
