Before storing your tapes, play them through (using the play mode) and do not rewind. This produces tapes with the ideal winding tension. Using fast forward or rewind modes produces wound tape with uneven tension. Store tapes in polypropylene rigid storage boxes or at least in clean, dustproof containers when they are not being used.
