During apartheid, black South Africans were forced to live in areas set apart from whites. These areas, which came to be known as townships, remain today even though apartheid has disappeared, and many are struggling to overcome poverty, poor housing, and overcrowding. Soweto, which is an acronym for the South Western Township, is home to an estimated two to four million people and is by far the largest township in South Africa.

The US Public Land Survey (USPLS) was used to survey and subdivide lands starting in the 1800's. A standard "Township" is a 6 mile x 6 mile square composed of 36 one mile square sections. The "Township" is defined by a north or south Township number and an east or west Range number from a set reference line. Note that "Township" refers both to the north/south descriptor and the 6x6 unit described by a pair of Township and Range descriptors.

As such anyone who lives in a non-hydrant area that is within 8 kilometers for residential and 5kms for industrial (by road) from the Rockwood station are within the coverage area of this accreditation. Townships, by law, cannot levy income taxes; however, in 1994 township residents voted to enter into a Joint Economic Development District agreement with the City of Akron. Akron agreed to install new water and sewer lines to designated areas to help economic development in the township and increase the township's property tax base, and to refrain from any further annexation procedures in the township.

Tredyffrin Township does have public sewer; however AQUA PA provides water service. Go to Sewer Department. Most projects do require a permit. Check the Building & Construction page, or contact the Township's Building Inspections Department to determine whether or not you need a permit for your project. YES. Permits can be picked up at the Township Office. Cost is $2.00. Burning is limited to the first weekend of every month. There are other restrictions that will be detailed within the permit. Please make sure you call the number on your burn permit (215) 256-6300 before burning. This is an important safety step that takes only a minute before you begin burning. Thank you!

The pavilions at the Heckler Farmstead, Charles L. Reed Memorial Park and Alvin C. Alderfer Park can be reserved for family picnics by calling the township office at 215-256-8087, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Even though we don't like to think about it, the Township maintains three cemeteries, Lakeside, Harger and Green. The cost for a plot in any of the cemeteries is $500 for residents of the township, and $1000 for non-residents. There is a $100 transfer fee to immediate family members.
