How do I clean my Gore-Tex shell?

Frequently Asked Questions | marmot.com
Wash in Granger’s G-Wash Cleaner Plus—an effective, residue-free cleaner. Typical laundry detergents contain fabric softeners, fragrance and color brighteners which are water-attractive residues—not something you want on the surface of your Gore-Tex fabric. A mild powered detergent, such as “Dreft” is acceptable if thoroughly rinsed. (Absolutely NO “Ivory Snow” or Woolite—they are loaded with wate-attractive residues). See similar questions...

What is Gore-Tex?

FAQ's Frequently Asked Questions - Motorcycle Superstore
Gore-Tex fabric is created when Gore laminates their patented Gore-Tex membrane to high-performance textiles, which are then used by garment manufacturers to make outerwear, accessories, and footwear. The Gore-Tex membrane has 9 billion pores per square inch, with each pore 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet. These tiny holes are too small for water and wind to pass through from the outside, which is how Gore can guarantee you'll stay dry and warm in a garment made with Gore-Tex fabric. How well do Drymax? Socks work with waterproof-breathable material (ie: Gore-Tex?) shoes or boots?

Strabell - Active Dry FAQ's
Waterproof/breathable materials have membranes with microscopic holes which are great at keeping water out, but they breathe and move moisture vapor out of the footwear at a much slower rate than nylon or nylon-mesh. This situation makes it very important to wear Drymax Socks because they actually move moisture away from the skin and truly keep your feet dry. Therefore, the Drymax Socks are the very best socks to wear with shoes or boots made with waterproof/breathable materials. See similar questions...

Why buy a Gore-Tex dry suit?

Dry Suit FAQ, A Buyer's Guide to Drysuits for Non-SCUBA Use
If you can afford a Gore-Tex model dry suit, it is worth it. You'll be drier, much drier, because Gore-Tex breaths. Coated nylon is waterproof, but you get damp/wet from your own perspiration. Hardly anyone is buying coated nylon suits anymore, especially if they've tried a Gore-Tex suit. So a Gore-Tex suit also holds it's resale value better if you ever want to sell it. How do I get stains out of my Gore-Tex®?

FAQ's
How did you get them in there? We really want to know. It is very helpful to know what the stain is when attempting to remove it. We use a variety of products depending on the type of stain. Citrus based stain removers work well on chewing gum and greasy stains. Many commercial products found in your supermarket work very well. There is very little you can do to damage the Gore-Tex® layer of your garment however, care should be used not to damage the shell fabric. See similar questions...

We offer the best solutions for ill fitting outdoor garments and gear. All our alterations are done with a factory finish. We do not take short cuts altering technical garments. We can shorten sleeves and pant legs, even above articulated joints. Gussets can be added for more freedom of movement. See similar questions...

Will salt clog up the semi permeable micro porous GORE-TEX? membrane?

No, this is a myth! Salt molecules are far too large to fit into the tiny holes in the GORE-TEX? membrane. If you don't wash all the saltwater off your garment after a trip to the ocean the remaining salt on the face fabric will attract moisture (so rinse it off!), but GORE-TEX? will breathe when the face fabric is completely saturated (even underwater). Q9. What will happen to the recently acquired Blue Gore-Tex outerwear?

Clothing and Equipment - Millennium Standard (CEMS) - FAQ
A9. The blue Gore-Tex will eventually be phased out as part of the operational dress, but this does not mean that it will not remain in inventory. Air Force Council (AFC) recently approved wearing of the Gore-Tex with DEU as an interim replacement for the gabardine coat. It is hoped that this interim fix will become permanent, thus providing a warm parka for Air Force personnel. See similar questions...

Why should I treat my Gore-Tex lined leather footwear and how should I do it?

Vasque - FAQ
All leathers absorb water if left untreated. Leather boots get wet as a result of wicking action occurring when water passes through the leather from fiber to fiber, a pumping action can force water through the leather as it flexes. A truly water-repellant boot must allow the internal leather fibers to surround themselves with a water repelling material in order to prevent the absorption of water. See similar questions...

In the snowy High Sierra's, did you wear gaiter's or gore-tex socks with your trail runner's?

PCT Questions and answers
No. That was something that I studied quite a bit before my hike, but I finally made no changes from my plain sock/shoe set-up. I also knew that I would pass by a couple of outfitter's while in the desert section so I'd have about a month to adjust for the Sierra's if I learned that I'd need them after talking to other hiker's along the way and also headed to the same high country as me. 2001 was also a very low snow year which also had something to do with my decision. Why do I need to use a water-repellent treatment on my GORE-TEX? product?

Frequently Asked Questions - GORE-TEX® Products
Gore shell fabrics, the outermost fabric layer of a GORE-TEX? garment, are treated with an ultra-thin polymer coating known as DWR, or durable water repellent. This coating causes water to bead up and roll off the outer layer of fabric, instead of being absorbed. Water-repellent outer fabric provides additional insulation and prevents liquid from saturating your garment's outer fabric, a condition known as "wet out" that can make you feel damp and clammy.
