The bottles should be made up as normal and allowed to cool to body temperature (not hot – not cold). Add four drops of Colief® and hold at room temperature for approx half an hour before giving the feed to the baby. Always check the temperature of the feed before feeding the baby.

Express-off a single feed, and whilst still at body temperature, pour this into a feeding bottle and add four drops of Colief®, shaking occasionally. The feed will be ready to use after approx half an hour.

Express a few teaspoons of milk into a sterilised container. Then add 4 drops of Colief® Infant Drops and feed it back to the baby using a sterilised plastic spoon. Immediately start breastfeeding as normal.

Feeding with a bottle is fine. But you must sterilise the bottle properly. Never add sugar or put sugary drinks into the bottle. Bottle-feeding with drinks containing sugar can lead to ‘bottle caries’ (tooth decay). A baby is not born with a sweet tooth and will only have a taste for sugar if it is given at an early age.

Yes, but introducing formula too early has been shown to greatly increase the chance of breastfeeding failure. This is because your baby may be too full from formula to nurse frequently, and this will reduce your milk supply. Your body makes as much milk as your baby demands -- your baby will demand less if she's drinking formula. Formula also takes a long time to digest, so your baby may not want to nurse for several hours after drinking formula.

The fact that the lives of 1.5 million babies could be saved if exclusive breastfeeding was successfully promoted and maintained is often distorted to suggest the fault lies with the use of infant formula. The distorted use of this statement is expressed through campaign slogans like: "A baby dies every 30 seconds from unsafe bottle feeding" or "The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 1.5 million infants die as a result of diarrhea every year because they are not breastfed.

Unopened bottles of Colief® should be stored in a cool dry place, below 25 degC. Once opened, Colief® should be stored in a refrigerator and the opened bottle discarded after 3 – 4 weeks. The bottle must not be allowed to freeze.

Colief® was tested at Cork University Hospital, Ireland by Prof. Kearney in the early 1990’s to demonstrate that a lactose-reduced feed was effective in reducing infant colic. His results were presented to the Royal College of Paediatricians at their annual meeting in spring 1994 and published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics in Sept 1998.

A working mother can breastfeed the baby when she is at home and breastfeed more often during holidays. When she is at work, expressed breast milk, mashed. banana and other fruits, homemade soft foods, and beaten curds or buttermilk can be given to the baby. If essential, artificial milk can also be given.
