DMA channels are programmed using Port I/O calls, which are covered in section A). The memory DMA'd from and to should be "DMA SAFE". Before QNX® version 4.24 the shared memory routines always allocate contiguous memory. In 4.24 this changed. Now the only way to allocate DMA SAFE memory with the qnx_segment_alloc_flags() routine. There is a _PMF_DMA_SAFE flag as well as a _PMF_DMA_HIGH flag. Use the DMA HIGH flag if memory above 16Meg is ok, or in other words, you have a PCI adapter.

In order to do a sprite DMA you have to have a sprite table with address $xx00. (x = don't care) Depending on the address of this sprite table you have several options: Sprite table not in video RAM ($8000-$9fff) - Most games do not put their sprite table in video RAM but rather usually use low RAM ($c000-$dfff). The reason for this is because you can write to low RAM at any time but video RAM is picky about writes when the screen is on.

StudioCard installs in Windows as several audio devices. As the default, you will have at least 4 stereo StudioCard devices available to your application. If your software works with multiple audio cards, simply use different StudioCard devices for each track. For example, you may also get more that 2 channel performance by running two instances of our DEMO32 program, with different devices chosen. bit disk access will not increase signal fidelity, only the speed of data transfer.

Knoppix does the very best it can to automatically figure out what hardware the PC has & it does this without human intervention. DMA is a feature that speeds up data tranfer on IDE devices such as CDROM drive& HD drives. Some chipsets and/or harddiscs are broken or buggy. Using DMA would cause problems on such systems. If your system works properly with DMA, and you are booting from HD, you can enable it by typing "/sbin/hdparm -c3 -d1 -m16 -k1 /dev/hda" or by editing the "/etc/init.

Most DVD-Video discs contain Dolby Digital soundtracks. However, it's not required. Some discs, especially those containing only audio, have PCM tracks. It's also possible for a 625/50 (PAL) disc to contain only MPEG audio, but so far MPEG audio is not widely used. Don't assume that the "Dolby Digital" label is a guarantee of 5.1 channels. A Dolby Digital soundtrack can be mono, dual mono, stereo, Dolby Surround stereo, etc.

Sure. For quite some time people like Tom Jung of DMP Records have been experimenting with an extra channel for a height signal. This is hung about eight feet above the front center channel. Tom Holman (the father of THX and unofficial godfather of 5.1) has been experimenting with a 10.2 system that employs stereo height channels as well as side channels. Many feature films now use the Dolby Digital EX or the DTS-ES 6.1 format in which a center rear channel is used.

Answer: Each Audia device can simultaneously send and receive 4 bundles with up to 8 audio channels in each bundle. This gives us a maximum of 64 channels of CobraNet through an Audia unit (32in/32out.)

I've seen remotes with a "Home Theater" button, that allows you to turn on your entire group of devices at once when watching a DVD movie.

Ultra-DMA, also knows as UDMA, Ultra ATA, or Fast ATA-2 , is a further enhancement of the EIDE disk-drive interface, available on the newer G3 Macs and on some PCs (Intel 440TX, LX, BX, and later chipsets; VIA/AMD VPX, VP2/97, AMD-640 chipsets; Promise Ultra33 (FastTrack) controller. Win95 and WinNT require an upgrade to exploit UDMA; Win98 supports it fully). UDMA drives tend to be a lot cheaper that SCSI-3 drives, and are often capable of stutter-free capture and playback of DV data.

DMA (Direct Memory Access) is a system whereby the peripherals on your computer can transfer data to and from memory directly, without going via the CPU. If the picture display is jerky, having DMA enabled significantly improves performance. We strongly recommend that you have DMA enabled when running ShowShifter. Windows disables DMA by default.

Nope! You can use jumpers to connect all input channel connectors (plus and minus required, shield is discretionary). For the MA 6S, in normal (unbridged) mode, all channels are independent. In bridged mode, adjacent channels are paired for master/slave operation. The pairing for bridged mode is 1 & 2, 3 & 4, 5 & 6.
