The goal of a Liberal Arts college is to broadly educate its students. Liberal Arts colleges are not job training centers. Certainly, through the selection and completion of a major program of study, graduates will have an area in which they have a skill set and knowledge base of greater depth, but they will also be educated across many disciplines. A Liberal Arts degree allows one to move easily into positions of leadership, or to change one’s career direction entirely.

The Liberal Arts program is designed to prepare students for transfer directly into a university level baccalaureate program. It requires different levels of math, English reading, and English writing than those in the career and technical programs. The required courses for each of the programs/majors (degree or certificates) are listed in the HawCC catalog.

The Post-Bachelor Certification Program is designed for people with a bachelor’s degree who wish to earn their teaching certificate. This program requires a minimum commitment of 24 months in a full-time student status to complete the Teacher Certification Program. During their course of study, students receive instruction from nationally renowned faculty and classroom experiences with outstanding K-12 teachers, resulting in preparation to meet the challenges of the teaching profession.

The RBA degree is an external degree offered at Shepherd University and nine other public universities in West Virginia. It is a very flexible degree program designed to encourage mature persons with some university credits or no prior university credits on record to return to university and complete baccalaureate degree studies. Bachelor degree is a must if you are applying for an Alien Registration Certificate. This certificate will make your life a lot simpler and there are added benefits to having this type of visa. If you have a TESOL, TEFL, CELTA or RSA, these are recognized certificates that will benefit your employment chances greatly. Experienced teachers are always in demand. Students who do not wish to pursue a graduate degree may seek "special student" (non degree) status. They must apply to the College of Education's Office of Teacher Education and Student Services. Students who already have graduate standing must apply to the UI Graduate College for "certification only" and must apply separately for admission to the teacher education program.

Just taking the major area coursework may not give you the appropriate background to be successful in completing the degree. It depends on how many courses you can take in a semester to finish the remaining required courses (about 45 credits if required freshman and sophomore courses have been completed along with General Education).
