Disk space: GMT contains some 100,000 lines of code. On a Linux workstation the executables take up about 15-50 Mb depending on use of shared libraries. In addition there are support data such as GSHHS coastlines, rivers, and political boundaries. The default distribution of these data includes intermediate, low and crude resolution versions which together takes up another 5 Mb of space. These are sufficient for most regional map applications.

The payment made for the use of disk space is not a sales price, but a service fee. The student buys a service, not title to the space on the disk. Think in terms of monthly telephone service, you pay for the right to use the telephone lines when you pay your monthly phone bill. The University owns the medium; it does not purport to own copyrightable work placed on/in the medium.

At the moment, there are no quotas. This *does not mean*, however, that you can use hundreds of megabytes of disk space. Remember that you are sharing the same disk with many other grad students. Please be courteous. To find out how much space you are using, type "du -s" (no quotes) in your home directory. The number that is returned is in kilobytes. For example: cantor> du -s 8437 means that I am using 8+ megabytes of space.

In order to effectively manage disk space allocation, all students are given a disk quota which is a maximum amount of space that each student can use when saving files on the system. Full details of quota's and how to check you usage can be found here.

According to a paper present by Dan Hamel of Transarc, at the Decorum conference in February 1994, the following can be used as rough guidelines: end-user machines: Each dce_login creates new credential files, which can build up. Space usage can range from less than 1k to over 100k. The security server as shipped by the Open Group keeps all security registry information resident in main memory, which means that the security host machine needs memory as well as disk.

Shuffling data around on the undersized disk to different filesystems and creating symbolic links is not recommended. In situations where your system disk is no longer of sufficient capacity to accomodate your work, please contact help@cs.cmu.edu to discuss purchasing a new disk. Please do not buy a disk for your workstation without consulting us, first. Some workstations can support additional internal disks.
