I caught a number of winged insects in my basement. How can I tell if they are ants or termites?

If Plants Could Talk:FAQ
Flying termites have straight bead-chain antenna, four wings of equal length and the wings are two times body length. Flying ants have elbowed antenna, front wings longer than hind wings and a pinched waste (middle of body). This is not the best site for Rhododendrons and Azaleas. They require acid soils (pH of 4.5 - 5.5), a moist but well drained soil, and part-shade conditions. Soil around the foundation is more likely to be alkaline and dry.

How can I tell the difference between fire ants and termites?

Texas Imported Fire Ant Research and Management Project
Although most ants are recognizable, some forms of winged ants are often confused with termites, especially during the termite swarming season. The front pair of wings on ants is larger than the hind pair, while the four wings of termites are approximately the same size. Ants have "elbowed" antennae and a "thin waist" (narrow between the thorax and first abdominal segments). See similar questions...

How do ThermaSteel panels stand up to termites, ants and wood boring insects?

Thermasteel Corporation.. the building system for the 21st c...
The bottom line is... insects just don’t feed on steel. The EPS portion of the panel is of a modified type, which offers no food value for insects. Certain species of termites will find ways to pass through minute cracks in concrete to get to their favorite food...wood. Likewise they have been known to bore their way through EPS to get to wood and ants have been known to nest in certain types of EPS. See similar questions...

Frequently Asked Questions about Structural Insulated Panels...
No more than in conventional construction. In climates where either termites or ants can cause problems, panel manufacturers recommend that all homeowners use the same preventive treatments (topical sprays around foundations, termite shields, etc.) they would use in a stick framed home. Preventive measures at the time of construction will aid in preventing infestation. Check with officials in your area. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is non-intrusive to insects. How can I tell if I have termites?

Welcome to Texas Home Shield
Usually the first indicator for most homeowners is when the termites swarm in the spring. You may see dead winged individuals or just the wings, in places such as window sills, door ways, around light fixtures, etc. Other signs of infestation may be "mud tubes" leading into the structure, on interior or exterior drywall, siding, or wood structural members. At some point, the majority of homes in North Texas become susceptible to infestation. Remember, these insects See similar questions...

Can I tell the difference between fire ants and native ants? How large are fire ants?

Texas Imported Fire Ant Research and Management Project
Some uncertainty comes from the fact that red imported fire ants vary in size (1/16 to almost 1/4 inch long), with the largest workers 2 or 3 times larger than the smallest. Native fire ants are less common in imported fire ant infested areas. Solenopsis geminata is the most common native fire ant species encountered. To the unaided eye, they are almost identical to red imported fire ants. However, S. geminata will have a few larger workers with large, square-shaped heads. See similar questions...

What about pests i.e. roaches, ants, mice and termites?

Twinsulation - Certified Spray Foam Applicators
SEALECTION 500 insulation offers no food value, but it would not present a sufficient barrier to their entry if they decided to gnaw through it. Normally, pests take "the path of least resistance" and if they cannot detect a food source then they would normally not attempt to go through. In this sense, SEALECTION 500 acts as a physical barrier and an odor barrier that has shown to significantly reduce the number of pests entering the homes. See similar questions...

These are not ants, but rather a wingless solitary (non-social) female wasp in the family Multillidae. Females are wingless and typically colorful; males have wings. The common name for the group is "velvet ants." Here in Central Texas we have about 40 species of velvet ants, some small and some big. The "hiss" is called "stridulation" and is caused by washboard-textured body segments rubbing rapidly against one another. See similar questions...

How do I keep bees/ants/other insects away from my feeder?

Hummingbird FAQ at BestNest.com
It is very difficult to keep insects, especially flying insects, away from hummingbird feeders. Some feeders have built-in nectar guards that prevent the insect from getting access to the nectar by using a flexible membrane that only the hummingbirds are able to bypass. To deter ants, you may want to purchase a feeder with a built-in "ant cup", which can be filled with water and prevents the ants from reaching the feeding ports. See similar questions...
