The basic method is to replace the panel by drilling out the old rivets. This is not cheap. With vintage trailers (25 or more years ) parts might not be available. Consider this when buying an old trailer. Some parts like Banana Wraps (lower rocker strips) can easily be bumped out. Our metal "can" style mufflers that sit right behind the engine can have the circular metal baffle inside removed for a slight increase in power. Our plastic tuned pipe and plastic side mufflers do not have any parts that can be removed to increase power. If anything is removed you risk melting the pipe which will require a replacement at your expense. The plastic tuned pipe is ultrasonically welded together, so taking it apart will make it will not perform as well as before. See similar questions...

The Armstrong "Bay Breeze" was used when they first became available in 1960, and then as long as they were made. Sounded more like a hurricane than a breeze, but if you compare components and operation with newer RV AC's the difference was significant. These units are definitely worth repairing. As opposed to painted trailers, an Airstream should never be covered. The action caused by the tarp moving against the skin will cause black marks very quickly. There is little you can do to reduce the amount of essential habitation equipment (hence the term 'essential'). the total payload is restricted, it follows that the more optional equipment you choose to have installed on the Airstream (air conditioning, sub floor fresh and waste water tanks, microwave etc.), the less allowance will remain for personal effects (clothing, kitchen items etc.).
