Chimney cleaning logs are not a substitute for a professional chimney sweeping, but they do do some good. It's a bit like running weakly soapy water over your hands but not scrubbing.

It should be stated at the outset, that no chimney cleaning (or anti-creosote) product is a substitute for professional cleaning and inspection. Most anti-creosote products only make it easier to remove creosote from a chimney. They are akin to an oven cleaner that loosens baked-on grease but still requires scrubbing to actually remove the grease. Yes. Modern furnaces produce cooler flue gases and are more acidic. Vapors tend to linger in the flue liner. The mortar then deteriorates and gas can escape into the house, so it’s important for the chimney and all its components to be kept in good condition. Some furnace manufacturers say the chimney should be lined to prevent this. Also check to be sure the chimney is not being blocked by bird nests or other debris.

Our logs are air dried in our construction yard to average moisture content of between 15% and 20% before we begin building. There are many log homeowners but only a few can claim to live in a real handcrafted work of art. There are many types of synthetic (manufactured) logs on the market. You need to carefully read the instructions on the packaging. Those instructions should clearly mention whether the logs are approved for use in a fireplace (freestanding stove, zero clearance fireplace, or fireplace insert). If there is no restriction mentioned on the packaging, try to contact the log manufacturer. Some types of synthetic logs are forbidden for use in freestanding stoves.
