We typically mow the lawn weekly. We are sometimes able to cut it twice in one week during the heavy growing season. We usually trim markers six times during the growing season. Families are welcome to trim their markers more often if they wish, provided they take care not to disturb the soil. Soil disruption allows for weed seeds to take root and grow.

Aim to mow your lawn on 4- or 5-day intervals while it is growing most rapidly during the summer. That way you'll not remove more than one-third of its growth at any given time. Letting the grass grow taller weakens it. White grub worms (larval form of June beetles) devour turf roots (both bermuda and St. Augustine) leaving the grass dead and lifeless on top of the soil. Their prime season of activity starts 6 weeks after the major June beetle flight in early summer and continues until frost.

Improper mowing is probably the cause. You’re probably removing too much of the grass leaf at each mowing. You should either mow more frequently so you never remove more than one third of the leaf blade, or you need to level out your yard’s high spots because the mower is cutting too low as it goes over bumps. You’re looking a common lawn problem: iron deficiency. Usually, you’ll find this condition in soils with high pH.

Optimum grass height varies by region - and by grass type. For example, creeping bentgrass spreads by stolons and should be mown below a 1/2 inch. In fact, if you mow this grass variety too high, it may develop thatch problems. Conversely, Canada bluegrass won't tolerate close cuttings and needs to be kept above 2-1/2 inches in order to survive. Canadian geese are a protected species. We contract with a geese control expert who chases them from the property periodically, keeping their numbers to a minimum. Geese droppings are a nuisance, but are normal in the natural setting we have created at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. They will eventually wash into the soil with a moderate to heavy rain and become fertilizer.

Unfortunately, there is occasional pilferage within the cemetery by both animals and humans. The cemetery is not responsible for lost or stolen flowers or decorations. We may remove, at our discretion, an item in a breakable container (these are not allowed at any time) or one left lying on the lawn.

Shockers are a type of spool valve marker which use only one main moving part (bolt). In brief, the bolt acts as its own valve; internal air passages inside the bolt become open when it moves forward, then when it cycles back said passages become closed once again. You can generally start mowing 3-4 weeks after seeding your Bermuda lawn. Occasionally if growth is rampant, you may need to mow within 2 weeks after planting. Thereafter, mowing will be required in a range of 3 to 7 days depending on various factors. Bermudas are mowed from around 3/8 inch to 1 & 1/2 inches in height. Lower mowings require more frequent mowing. Height below around 1 inch may require a "reel" type mower to prevent scalping.

From what I have seen with spirits is that each of them have their own designs of Heaven (a “Screen Saver”). They create their "Heaven" to be whatever they feel comfortable with. Weather permitting, the gate to Rampart Reservoir should be open by mid May each year. You can, however, in the meantime hike to Rampart Reservoir from the Rainbow Gulch Trailhead. The 1.4-mile trail will take you to the Rampart Reservoir inlet and to some potentially good fishing. Keep in mind that the campgrounds won't be open until the end of May, again weather permitting. The gate usually closes in November after the first major snowfall.

If your grass blades are covered in an orange powder, and the reddish-brown lesions underneath don’t rub off, you’ve got rust. The fungi to blame are usually active during humid weather. Grasses under stress from nitrogen deficiencies, moisture shortages or close mowing are most susceptible. Rust develops slowly, so in many cases frequent mowing's, adequate water and an application of a high-nitrogen fertilizer can stop the problem. Frequent mowing can help control the problem too.
