You may never need to do it, but just in case, here's how to install your SIM card and your battery. By the way, SIM stands for "Subscriber Information Module." It's a postage stamp sized silicon wafer that contains your phone number and all the data required to make your phone work. To insert your SIM card and your battery you will need to remove the back cover plate.

Remove the battery pack, located under the battery cover on the back of the phone. With the metal contacts facedown, align the notch on the SIM card with the notch on the SIM slot and insert the SIM card. If SIM is inserted correctly, you will not be able to see the metal contacts after inserting the card, because they are facing away from you. Replace the battery pack and battery cover then turn on the phone. If SIM was installed properly, you will be able to begin making calls.

Ordinary cell phone service works so that the unique serial number in your phone (its ESN) is used by the cell phone service provider to identify who you are. The wireless service 'knows' that a particular phone's serial number is your phone and knows to send phone calls to that phone when someone dials your phone number. A GSM phone is not directly linked to you. Instead, it has a removable account card, called a SIM (subscriber information module) and this SIM has a unique serial number on it.

Insert the card into the card slot as shown. (The EVOLT E-500 supports xD-Picture Card media as well as CompactFlash? media.) Push the card gently straight in until it clicks.

For CompactFlash? media, hold the memory card so that the contact area is on the card's left, pointing into the card slot, and the CF Mark is in the upper left corner of the card. For xD-Picture Card? media, hold the memory card so that the gold contact area is facing the back of the camera and the notch is facing down.
