A crossed E1/T1 cable can be used to loop back an E1/T1 port, i.e. make a GTH transmit to itself. The connector is RJ45. E1 lines are specified for 120 ohm cables, so a CAT-5 or CAT-5e cable (100 ohm) is out-of-spec and thus not recommended for anything beyond lab use.

This question assumes that you are connected by an internal bus that you installed, attached directly to the NT (without using an RJ45 cable). The easiest way to test it is to buy a little cable tester (the author of this FAQ got one from Conrad Electronics in Germany for 29,- DM - just follow the simple instructions). Homemade cables are not as good as manufactured cables due to stray effects (inductance and capacitance) because they are not tightly and controllably wrapped and shielded. Such affects can slow transfer speed, cause timeouts and in extreme cases, can even cause corruption of transferred files. If you want to make your own cable, keep it as short as possible. Sure, but it may not be worth the effort in research, soldering, testing, and cost of parts. The cable is sensitive to interference and signal loss, and is carefully engineered, manufactured and tested. This is a known issue with the Comtrol drivers. They are fixing it. The GTH maintains a number of error counters for each receiver. The counters can be used to help diagnose a number of L1 problems. The operator's PDH network is not maintaining correct internal sync. Understanding the operator's sync toplogy is a pre-requisite to troubleshooting this problem.
