The Form I-94 is a critical document. It shows that a nonimmigrant has been legally admitted to the United States, the class of admission, and the authorized period of stay. It is very important that the information on the form is correct. This information is input into a system that shows arrival and departure information. Inconsistencies between the information on the Form I-94 and SEVIS records can reduce the chances of a successful systems interface.

This is the "Arrival/Departure Form" for international travelers. Upon arrival in the U.S., the immigration officer issues the traveler the departure portion of Form I-94 marked with date, place of entry, the alien's status (F-1 for students), a unique 11-digit admission number, and date of expiration of period of admission. F-1 visa holders will not have a specific date here.

You will complete the I-94 upon your arrival in the US. An immigration officer will scan your I-20 (if you are an F-1 visa holder) and stamp your I-94. If you have an F-1 visa the officer will write "D/S" on your I-94. If you are here on a tourist or waiver visa the officer will stamp your expiration date in the I-94.

If you have left the United States and are still in possession of the I-94 or I-94W it is in your best interest to forward it to the U.S. immigration authorities in the United States so that your record is corrected and that you do not experience any problems on future travel to the United States as a result.
