I use rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and I spray the aphids directly. It kills them and evaporates without leaving any poisonous residue. I usually have to go back a time or two before all of the aphids are gone, but it works great.

Aphids are tiny insects about a 1/16 to 1/8 inches long, usually light green, red or black. They come in the spring and damage tender new growth. It's a hardy weed, so you don't have to be too careful. Put it where it will get some moisture. Full sun is fine, but it does well anywhere. Predator animals have no choice. They must eat other animals in order to live. Perhaps this is the way that nature takes care of old and weak animals that would not be able to survive much longer anyway. But human beings do have a choice, and we now know that we can be very healthy on a vegetarian diet, in fact far healthier than on a meat-based diet. Caterpillars are very host specific; each species will only feed on one kind of plant or group of plants. Caterpillars are voracious eaters and would soon defoliate the plants in the Conservatory if they were present. There is an oval opening called a 'spiracle' on each side of each segment. These are connected to a tube, the 'trachea.' As the caterpillar moves, air is pumped into the trachea, causing oxygen to be taken in and carbon dioxide to be pushed out. While aphids may be disposed of by using insecticides, there are alternatives. Knock them off the plant with a strong spray of water. Attract birds to you garden to feast on them. Pick them off by hand. If you have only a few roses, picking them off by hand is very easy. The newest buds appeal to them the most. Run your fingers along the stem, squishing the bugs as you go.
