Teeth are often restored with fillings of silver or composite plastics. These materials can often accomplish the aim of replacing the part of the tooth that has been lost. However, there comes a time where the damage to the tooth has destroyed too much structure to hold a filling. The crown is the dental restoration that can reinforce and re-establish the entire top of a tooth and can also be part of the attachment of a fixed bridge for the replacement of teeth.

There are three types of crowns, each made of a different mix of materials. They can be gold, porcelain, or a mix of porcelain and metal.

With good oral hygiene, dental crowns can last up to fifteen years. If you have a dental bridge, it is recommended you not chew hard candy or extremely sticky caramel. Otherwise, dental bridges can also last ten to fifteen years.

Once your crown is in place, make sure the area is brushed well and that you floss below the gum line. While the crown protects your remaining tooth from further decay, you must protect the base of the crown from bacterial growth and gum disease. Regular brushing and flossing will ensure that your crown will be in place for years to come.

Any procedure that improves the smile’s appearance, but is not always medically necessary is considered cosmetic. The most common are porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, dental implants, dental bonding and filling upgrades.

Looks completely natural. Porcelain crowns or new reinforced resin are considered to be the most aesthetically pleasing as it is easily matched in colour to the surrounding teeth.

A crown will work just like a healthy tooth. However, crowns can sometimes come loose over time and may need to be replaced or cemented in again. If the decay is near the centre of the tooth and bacteria invade the pulp, the pulp may die. If this happens, the crown may need to be removed and root canal treatment will be needed to eliminate the bacteria and dead pulp.

The amount of time a porcelain veneer or dental crown (cap) lasts depends on many different factors, including at-home care, a patient's commitment to follow-up visits with the dentist, and the quality of the crown or veneer.

Dental crowns (caps) and bridges used to be made of porcelain bonded to metal. This often resulted in visible black margins, unnatural looking teeth, and, after a few years, gum tissue irritation. We now use metal-free porcelain crowns and bridges in order to create a more natural looking smile. These non-metal restorations allow the natural tooth color to show through, which results in better color matching. Due to its strength, porcelain can actually increase the strength of your tooth.
