Once you have selected a stock to trade, you must know the ticker symbol of the company to trade it. The ticker symbol is a one to five digit code for a publicly traded company, which is used by investors to trade the securities of that company. There are a couple of locations where students can find ticker symbols: On the SMS Homepage there is a link to a Quick Ticker Symbol lookup in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Ticker symbols are entered using the symbol input box located in the upper left-hand portion of the window. After each symbol is entered into the input box, click the "Add Symbol" button to proceed. To enter multiple symbols, put a comma between the symbols, ie: aol,msft,csco,ibm & click the "Add Symbol" button to proceed . Each list will allow up to 50 unique symbols. Each symbol is composed of the first two letters of the genus+first two letters of the species+first letter of the terminal infraspecific name+tiebreaking number (if needed). Genus and family symbols are the first five (genus) or six (family) letters of the name, plus tiebreaking number (if needed).
