You have to realize the time period in which Titanic was built. The gilded age was an era when new and wondrous things were happening every day. The Titanic's shear size gave an impression of invulnerability. Most people don't realize it, but the White Star line never actually claimed Titanic was unsinkable. The Mersy Inquiry determined that there were 1,316 passsengers on board: 325 in first-class, 285 in second, and 706 in third-class. At the time of the sinking, the Ship's crew consisted of 885 men and women divided between three departments: Deck Department, 66; Engine Department, 325; Victualling (Passenger Care) Department, 494. Not included in this list are the eight members of the Ship's band who were technically from another company and traveled under second-class tickets.

White Star publicly announced their intention of building the Titanic in 1907 during the maiden voyage of RMS Lusitania, owned by their archrival the Cunard Line.
