Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County (BBBS) is a non-profit agency, established in 1969, serving Washington County. The mission of the agency is to put hope in a child's future by putting a friend in a child's life. BBBS offers one-to-one mentoring to children between the ages of 6-18. Children may be matched in the School-Based or Community-Based mentoring program.

During Homecoming season, kids can elect to participate. Once "signed up" each kid is assigned or picks a big/little sister/brother. Boys are paired with girls, and underclassmen are paired with upperclass band students. One person in each pair will know their partner, but it will be a secret to the other. Once the pairs are chosen, the two partners often give little gifts to each other. The gifts aren't meant to be excessive; usually they are silly tokens or candy.

The individualized attention and companionship our children receive as a result of being matched has proven to help keep them away from drugs and alcohol, help them perform better in school, and greatly reduce the likelihood they will have delinquent or aggressive behaviors. Volunteers do not need any special skills or experience to be a Big. Just spending time and caring about a Little makes a difference in the life of a child.

bull; Their brother or sister seems to hijack everything, from doing homework to watching TV or playing with friends. bull; There’s often resentment because the child with ADHD seems to get away with all sorts of things for which they would be punished. bull; Having a brother or sister with ADHD can lead to embarrassment at school. It can be difficult if teachers or other pupils keep on telling you about his or her wayward behaviour.

Brothers and sisters need to know that the child with ADHD can be bright and creative but have difficulty controlling their behaviour. Because of this, the whole family needs to make allowances. Some of these new rules will protect brothers and sisters, and also help the child with ADHD to help themselves by setting boundaries.

The agency deals with each child an an individual and not as part of a group. Through its unique ONE ADULT-to-ONE CHILD method, Big Brothers Big Sisters compliments without duplicating the fine work of other youth agencies.

Each match has a professional Match Support Specialist (MSS) who is there to support the child, parent and volunteer. The MSS helps the volunteer develop his or her friendship, address any questions, concerns, or problems, and offers guidance throughout the life of the match. They are also a helpful link to resources. Each Big and Little is assigned to a specific MSS who will check-in with the volunteer, child and parent on a monthly basis.

There are a number of helpful mentoring organizations for young people, but Life Coaches exists to address several unique differences: Life Coaches? is a Christian mentoring ministry. Life Coaches? believes that while traditional community based mentoring can be helpful to kids, that transformation require a holistic approach best embodied in a mentor with a deep commitment to following Jesus Christ as Lord and life leader.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) is the oldest and most highly respected youth mentoring organization in the nation, with over a century of proven success. Locally, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) has been serving Washington County children since 1969. During a thorough intake process, professional staff get to know the children and volunteers in the programs.

Yes. It is mandatory to stay involved with the agency. This is the responsibility of all parties, including the Big, Little and parent/guardian.

The children and their families are assessed by our professional staff to insure that we make the best match possible. Our Volunteers must also undergo a comprehensive intake process before meeting with a child, and we provide support and supervision to all parties involved.
