The ability to drive depends on whether surgery was on your right hip or your left hip and the type of vehicle you have. If the surgery was on your left hip and you have an automatic transmission, you could be driving at two weeks. If the surgery was on your right hip, your driving could be restricted as long as six weeks. Getting "back to normal" will depend somewhat on your progress. Consult with your surgeon or therapist for their advice on your activity.

In order to remove your drive cable, you will first loosen the two set screws in the shaft ferrule. This will be the tapered cylinder between the transom and the shaft strut. Next, you will loosen the cable collet compression nut, which is the 9/16" hex nut on the end of the collet. This will allow you to remove the cable.

The Bavarian Belle is driven by a single 120 horsepower 4 cylinder Detroit 471 diesel engine. A second 90 horse 4 cylinder Isuzu engine supplies a 32 kilowatt Norpro generator. We also use two Mercury 50 horse 4 stroke EFI power heads equipped with Kort nozzles as bow and stern side thrusters. The thrusters are fixed mounted sideways and only push side to side. We are very cognizant that pain control is very important for the patient's well being. Medications are provided to control the level of pain. The typical patient, however, requires only Tylenol and occasional Tylenol with Codeine for control of pain.

Generally speaking, we do not want anyone to drive until approximately 30 days after surgery, just to let you get over some of the soreness from surgery without depending on your reaction time while turning the steering wheel or having to brake. Sometimes people can start driving earlier, but we certainly do not want patients who are on narcotics or pain pills to drive. We suggest when you start to drive, you drive in an area that is very quiet so you can get your "driving legs" back.
