Gore-Tex fabric is created when Gore laminates their patented Gore-Tex membrane to high-performance textiles, which are then used by garment manufacturers to make outerwear, accessories, and footwear. The Gore-Tex membrane has 9 billion pores per square inch, with each pore 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet. These tiny holes are too small for water and wind to pass through from the outside, which is how Gore can guarantee you'll stay dry and warm in a garment made with Gore-Tex fabric.

Waterproof/breathable materials have membranes with microscopic holes which are great at keeping water out, but they breathe and move moisture vapor out of the footwear at a much slower rate than nylon or nylon-mesh. Dry-cleaning does not harm the GORE-TEX? membrane. However, follow the manufacturer's care instructions on your particular garment to make sure they recommend dry cleaning for it. If you do go the professional dry-cleaning route, request clear, distilled solvent rinse and spray repellent. UP

No, this is a myth! Salt molecules are far too large to fit into the tiny holes in the GORE-TEX? membrane. If you don't wash all the saltwater off your garment after a trip to the ocean the remaining salt on the face fabric will attract moisture (so rinse it off!), but GORE-TEX? will breathe when the face fabric is completely saturated (even underwater).

If you are new to diving, you should begin with a wetsuit or a semi-dry suit. A good fitting, quality wetsuit will provide adequate thermal insulation for you to be able to enjoy the underwater beauty of Monterey diving.
