First, of course, you pray. Ask God for patience and the right spirit of trust and obedience as you prepare, as well as for God to change your parents' hearts. Ask the Lord to guide you and make your calling certain. Ask Him to bring people into your parents' lives who will influence them positively toward missions. Talk casually with your parents from time to time about missions. Ask what it will take to receive their blessing and permission.

I suggest they start by finding an hour each week to spend together learning something (for my family, it's math, music, songwriting, astronomy and Spanish). And make it fun! Show your children that we are always learning, not just at school. Try to be a role model of lifelong learning. Encourage your children to spend their time productively, on educational entertainment and activities rather than exclusively on TV and video games. Suggest ways to be creative and invent their own games.

As a teacher, I respect the right of all students to learn what their minds and hearts yearn for, regardless of their age.
