We have all the information you need for finishing our beams on our website at FauxWoodBeams.com/beams_installation.php. We recommend using an acrylic deck stain. An acrylic deck stain dries in about an hour or two as compared to a gel stain that about 24 hours to dry. Also a good deck stain will have a UV protector in it to prevent the finish from fading. Oil base stains do not work well with our products.

The 3M automotive tape does its job very well, and removal of peel-and-stick trim products may cause damage to auto paint if you are not careful. While installation of our Chrome grill inserts does not cause damage, removal may, in some cases. The plastic clips hold tightly, and may possibly cause paint chips when being removed. Some models have 3M tape to supplement the clips, and the same precautions noted above must be taken when removing the tape.

There are many options for finishing a project. My standard finish includes dyes, wiping stains, sealers and lacquer. Dyes and stains used together produce a much deeper color (and darker if preferred) without "muddying" the finish. Grain patterns remain visible and can be highlighted if desired. I generally mix my own dyes and stains to attain a color that I am trying to match. Glazes highlight the pores and grain patterns.

Most of our products come with a black powder coat finish. They are sandblasted and cleaned before powder coating. Each product lists (on the individual product page) the finishes available. Panels are .062" aluminum that is sanded vertically to give it a nice finish, then the edges are masked and the panel is painted with a coat of 'Polane' industrial paint. A very light splatter coat is put on top of that, then the panels are silkscreen printed. See this up-close picture of a panel. All Pericom's products that are not lead-free are composed of 85% Sn and 15% Pb. For lead-free products, they are composed of 100% matte Sn. Lead-free products are marked and ordered with the letter "E" suffix at the end of the part number.

Malm's wax can be used on these surfaces in most cases. However, some surfaces may be very absorbent and you should test in a small area first. You can use our polish on fiberglass and chrome with excellent results. When using our polishes, lighten up your hand pressure on the last 10 to 20 strokes. This will give a better gloss and more control when trying to prevent those tiny scratches.

Pure matte tin plating will be used for the majority of Fairchild's products. Any exceptions to this will be clearly identified.

Generally there is no need to do so. In fact, most of the epoxy finish manufacturers recommend against it. If you need a less viscous finish for easier application, slightly warm the bottles containing the hardener and resin. You can do this in a microwave oven (tops loosened and heated for no more than 10 seconds - use caution), in a pan of hot water, from the heat of a hair dryer, or by putting them in your pants pockets for about 15 minutes (you have to be wearing the pants for this to work).
