Look along the length of the flower stem and you will see small ‘eyes’, each of these is capable of branching out and producing more buds. When the existing flowers are nearly over cut the stem off above one of the higher ‘eyes’ and within a few weeks it should start to shoot out a new stem. If all of the flowers have dropped then the stem may have started to die back and may not branch out.

Each generus of orchids are different. Phalaenopsis bloom spikes may be cut back to just above the node (the nodes are the little bumps on the spike) closest to the tip of the flower spike. This will encourage spiking and may produce more blooms. Before prunning, you will want to make sure the tip of the flower spike is dead. This is known as a keiki, and often occurs with plants grown in the home. It usually happens purely by accident and is a fun way of obtaining another little plant from your existing orchid. Let the keiki grow until it has several leaves and a good few roots, then it is strong enough to survive on its own. Answer: There are a few simple rules for how to cut your roses. Your goals are to have nice roses for inside and to encourage more roses outside. If you look at a rose cane, you will see that it has both three-leaf clusters and five-leaf clusters of leaves. To encourage new roses, be sure and make your cut just about 1/4 to 1/2 inch above a five-leaf cluster. That will cause the bush to put out a new stem and rose above that cut. The vast majority of orchid stems will simply die back when the flowers have faded so trim them back to make the plant look tidier. If your plant has healthy, with thick, green leaves that have not become wrinkled or drooping, cut the old flower stem up high, just above a "node" and just below the lowest bloom. The plant will frequently send out a new flowering branch at that location.
