There is no evidence that carbonated drinks expand the pouch or otherwise impair the surgical result. The bubbles make some people feel 'gassy' and that seems to be commoner after weight loss surgery.

Carbonation creates the "tingly fizz", giving soft drinks a refreshing taste and 'sparkle' and 'bubble' effect whenever the beverage is poured.

Many centers advise against this. But they will not harm you, or your operation. Many patients do find carbonated beverages uncomfortable, from the gas they produce. It is recommend that you avoid any flavored drinks between meals, such as diet soda, coffee and tea – use of these tends to activate your hunger mechanism. Why can’t I eat red meat after surgery? You can, but you will need to be very careful, and it is recommend that you avoid it for the first several months.

Suggestions that fizzy soft drinks "leach" calcium out of our bones are not supported by research. In fact, a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition recently tested several different kinds of fizzy carbonated drinks and found that only those with caffeine increased the loss of calcium in the urine.

Pain is very subjective. The same exact stimulus will lead to very different levels of "feeling" pain between different patients. Bariatric surgery is not an exceptionally painful operation. All in all, it is average. Having health insurance does not guarantee you will be covered for weight loss surgery. It is important that you fully understand what "is" and "is not" covered by your insurance provider.
