Burrowing owls are active day and night, and may be seen outside their burrows any time. In New Mexico, burrowing owls lay three to 10 eggs in the early spring. The eggs hatch about a month later. Young burrowing owls may be observed from Mid-April to the end of August.

Restrict the use of pesticides. Owls eat the insects we consider pests, and are therefore exposed to the insecticides we use around our homes. Pesticides limit and contaminate the food sources available to the owls. Starter burrows. Burrowing owls hunt for prey, care for their young, maintain their burrows, sleep and watch for potential predators.

The western species is found from Canada to Mexico, as far east as Texas and Louisiana and as far west as California. In some states the burrowing owl is on the endangered species list.

Their main diet consists of insects, anoles (lizards) frogs and mice. They obtain water from the food they eat. Please do not attempt to feed them. and display their wings to dissuade you from getting any closer. The city has never received any reports of injury to humans or pets from owls.

Burrowing owls migrate during the winter but are found in New Mexico all year. They like dry grasslands and move into underground burrows, often previously dug by other animals.

Burrowing owls are opportunistic, and feed on insects, small mammals, small birds and small lizards. They capture prey with their talons and also catch small insects while flying.

Burrows provide a safe havens from other animals that hunt them and from the weather. Unfortunately, burrows are often disturbed by people and domestic dogs and cats. In places without suitable burrows, artificial burrows in the form of nest boxes may be used.

Locally occurring mammals are usually not seen by the layperson. Most mammals have adapted their activity cycles to darkness (nocturnal). Nocturnal mammals are not easily seen by our limited vision. An easy method is to drive on country roads at night. Often, nocturnal mammals (e.g. mountain lion, coyote, fox, and coyote) will cross the road in front of you.

The earlier you arrive, the better your view and the closer you will be to the action. The sound system is set up in the Bowtie area (where Broadway and Seventh Avenue cross), and the video screens on One Times Square (where the Ball is lowered) are easily visible. In southern Africa (Botswana and Zimbabwe) the best wildlife viewing is during the dry season period April through October each year with July, August, and September being the most desirable months. Wildlife viewing is, in part, predicated on the amount of surface water available. During the rains (November through April) wildlife is scattered as there is abundant surface water (puddles, perennial rivers) to drink.

The prime time to visit the Serengeti is usually regarded as being from late November through to March when the big herds of wildebeest, Thomson's gazelle and zebra head on to the southern plains of the Serengeti. To get the best viewing on the other hand in Kenya's Masai Mara July through to September are usually regarded as the best months.

Our bear viewing is from May to September each year. In May, June and July bears are out of hybernation and feeding on sedge grass, barnicles and mussles on the beaches. In the beginning of August through to September visitors get the view the grizzlies and cubs catching salmon at the mouths of the creeks as the fish begin their journey up stream to spawn. You may also see massive schools of fish gathering at the mouths of the creeks, eagles, wolves and seals.
