Potted citrus trees can be planted almost anytime of the year. Fall and Spring are two of the better times. Since newly planted citrus trees are not as cold hardy as more mature ones, Fall planting should be done at least two (2) months before freezing temperatures can be expected.

Spring is an ideal time to plant new citrus trees. Garden centers have a good supply to pick from, and the trees are ready to begin root and shoot growth. Make sure you give the new tree a sunny site and space the trees at least 12 to 15 feet apart. If you miss the spring planting season, don't worry. Container-grown trees are available year-round. They can be added to the landscape anytime.

Start with what you like. If you like oranges pick a naval, blood, or Valencia. If you like grapefruit pick the white Marsh or a pink Ruby. What you really need to consider is where your citrus is going to be grown. Some are more susceptible to frost damage than others. And although there is always talk about covering citrus trees to get them through the cold nights of winter it's a lot of work.

A:The ideal pH for a citrus tree is 6.0 to 6.5, if it's on citrus roots, or 5.5 to 6.0, if budded/grafted to Poncirus roots or one of the Poncirus hybrids (citrumelo, citrange, etc.) Ideally, you should have your soil tested. A local extension office may do it for you, or even a local college or high school with a chemistry dept. Or you can buy fairly cheap pH meters or even cheaper pH testing paper (not very accurate, but perhaps close enough).

Most trees and shrubs do best when transplanted in the spring or fall, however I have found that with proper care you can transplant most pants just about any time. One more note about planting, a plant can be put in the ground any time of year as long as the ground is not frozen. It is the act of cutting the roots of a plant that is can kill it. A plant purchased at the nursury has already been transplanted and can be put in the ground any time as long as it gets watered.

However, you must purchase certified citrus plants from nurseries that are registered with the state and because of devastating diseases such as citrus canker and citrus greening, we strongly recommend that residents find alternatives to planting citrus ? there are many wonderful fruit trees that can be grown in your area.

The choice over whether to divide large plants really depends on your growing goals and situation. You may wish to grow the plant into a larger 'specimen plant' that will produce larger and more flowers reliably, or you may want to produce divisions for trade or sale if the plant is in demand. Because most of our plants 'work by producing seed, we are very hesitant to divide them unless they fall apart at a division point when they are repotted.

The Empress Tree can be planted throughout the year in various areas of the country. It can be planted while dormant in the winter or while growing in the spring, summer or fall. We recommend that when you receive your tree, you care for it in a gallon container so that it can adjust to your environment. Autumn and spring are much the best times for planting trees, shrubs, roses and herbaceous perennials when the ground is moist but not saturated. Ensure that the root ball of plants have been well soaked with water prior to planting. Make sure that the plants receive a good supply of water throughout their first year and water well in subsequent years during periods of drought. The state is working with the USDA and UF/IFAS to determine new management strategies for citrus diseases. Recommendations for dealing with trees suspected of having citrus canker will be available soon. For now, you should not move any citrus plant material or fruit from your property and avoid coming into contact with the suspect plant to prevent spread of the disease. Do not mail or bring samples of suspected citrus canker or greening to extension offices.

Oranges and grapefruit are highly susceptible to foot rot disease, caused by Phytophthora citropthora and P. nicotiana. Some rootstocks offer considerable resistance to that disease. So on infested land, it's important to use such a stock. Rootstock variety has some effect on the strength of flavor of the fruit, the sweetness, total yield of the tree, and cold-hardiness of the tree. Some citrus scion varieties are difficult to root from cuttings.

Air layers work best with a stem thicker than a finger -- maybe thumb size. But thinner stems can be layered if you're very careful not to break them. It's easiest to work when the plant is actively putting out new growth, since the bark will "slip," meaning it will peel cleanly away from the wood. Cut a ring around the stem, cutting through the bark to the wood. Don't go deeply into the wood. You can use a knife or the blade of a pruning clipper.

The ideal time to plant trees is during the trees' dormant season, after leaf drop in the fall and before bud break in the spring.

Basically, you can plant bamboo any time you can work the soil. We have done most of our planting from November through March; however, we have planted in every month of the year with success.
