The finished opening needs to be no less than two inches larger than whichever spiral staircase you choose.

The staircases in almost all conversions are positioned above the existing staircase of the house. They start at the side of the bedroom door and climb upwards along the flank wall of the house and land at the top level with the new loft floor. The first step is to determine how much lumber you’ll dry in a year. Then figure your average drying time for each of the species you’ll be drying, and you can calculate the size kiln you need from there. For example: you need to dry 500,000 board feet of oak per year. Fresh off the saw, oak takes about 28-30 days to dry, so you’ll be able to do 12 loads in a year. Each load will need to be 42,000 board feet to give you the 500,000 board feet you need for the year.

Eight 8d common nails (See Figure 5) should be driven through the rectangular box (stair frame) into the rough frame to help hold the stair in place temporarily while positioning the stair as in step 4 of the instructions. When used properly, the size screws and nails suggested are best.

For all prehung units we REQUIRE that you provide us with your rough opening size. We will build the unit to fit the rough opening size that is provided. If this is for new construction, we normally add 2" to the height of the door and a total of 2" to the width of the door for a rough opening.
