The Green Party of Canada was founded in 1983, born from a conference held at Carleton University in Ottawa. Under their first leader, Dr. Trevor Hancock, the party ran 52 candidates in the 1984 federal election. In 2004, the GPC became only the fourth political party in Canadian history to run a full slate of candidates - one in each of the 308 electoral districts!

The Green Party started in West Germany in 1979 when a group of civic organizations united in opposition to nuclear energy and nuclear weapons. Petra Kelly, one of the founding members of the Green Party, became Germany's first female political party leader in 1980. Activists soon started organizing for Green politics around the world. In 1984 Charlene Spretnak authored the Green Ten Key Values, which continue to be the guiding values of Greens in this country.

The Green Party of Canada is independent of other Green Parties around the world, and provincial Green Parties in Canada, yet remains philosophically aligned with them. The Green Party begins with the basic premise that all life on the planet is interconnected and that humans have a responsibility to protect and preserve the natural world.

On June 28, 2004, the Green Party of Canada made history when it became only the fourth federal political party ever to run candidates in all 308 ridings. Despite this feat, the Green Party was the only party running a full slate to be excluded from the televised leaders' debate. When the ballots were counted, the Green Party secured 4.3 per cent of the popular vote, thereby surpassing the 2 per cent threshold required for party financing under new Elections Canada rules.

Launched with funding from a US Environmental Protection Agency grant, Green Advantage? is the result of collaboration between the Nature Conservancy, Science Applications International Corporation, and the University of Florida. As a result of successful piloting and the work of scores of professionals assisting in the development of curricula, training and Exams, approximately 1000 building-related practitioners have taken the Green Advantage® Certification Exam.

The Green Party of Ontario (GPO) is a registered political party in Ontario with the stated mission to "...to move the state of the natural world and of human society and its economy in Ontario toward the party's goals, especially through electoral politics and government action." The GPO is a confederation of Constituency Associations (CA), or ridings, within Ontario that includes the Parkdale-High Park Green Party CA.

The Green Party of Sonoma County, or GPSC, is an informal association of Green Party activists working on local political initiatives and candidate campaigns, helping to build the Green Party in Sonoma County, and supporting statewide, national, and international Green Party issues at a grassroots level. We are affiliated with the Green Party of California.
