What kind of boots do I need?

ADK Winter Mountaineering School FAQS
Our requirements for boots are strict and non-negotiable. In the Adirondacks we may very well have to contend with rain and slushy snow, followed by rapid and drastic drops in temperature. That combined with a full day on the trail make it a requirement for you to be able to remove your inner liner to dry it out if necessary if you attend any of the backpacking sections. In general there are two types of boots acceptable for winter mountaineering in New York and New England.

BIG BLACK BOOTS - F A Q - Frequently asked Questions
Boots are made to be worn in wet conditions, so this is not a problem. Think of all the loggers and forest workers who wear Wesco boots in wet forests. The Dehner equestrian and Motor Patrol boots get wet all the time. The first thing to consider is that boots should be waxed or oiled so that they tend to repel water and are more resistant to water. Once they're wet, however, they should be dried as soon as possible with room temperature, dry air.

We fish a small trout stream during the spring schools. It is a freestone mountain stream and the water is cold. Wading gear is a must. Hip boots are fine for this creek because it is rather shallow. Chest waders are OK as well. Because of all the variations in people's foot sizes we are unable to provide wading gear. If you are still not sure this sport is for you, see if you can borrow a pair. If you are going to buy some, we recommend a pair of felt soled chest waders.
