Bluebirds are really grassland birds. It is difficult to attract them to urban or heavily wooded property. Most bluebirds prefer open fields with one or two large oak trees, pastures, vineyards, old orchards or large mowed yards with selected medium-sized trees for nest guarding. Nest boxes should be placed out in the open on fence posts or metal poles not nestled into groves of trees. Bluebirds are primarily insect eaters.

Bluebirds in the Lower Willamette Valley do not migrate south for the winter. They tend to join small flocks and forage on insects and dried berries. The will move to lower elevations if the winter is very cold. Sometimes they will roost over night in a nest box during the bitterest weather.

Other than that, there is nothing you can do but to keep the nest box free from being inhabited by house (English) sparrows. In 2004, scientists completed a study on the permanent de-facto marine reserve around the Cape Canaveral rocket launch site. They tagged fish inside and outside the reserve and followed their movements. To everyone's surprise, fish inside stayed inside but those outside migrated into the reserve, never to leave. Meal worms are not difficult to raise. Take a plastic container about 15x17x6-inches deep with a lid, and lay in a mix of wheat bran and non-medicated chicken feed for the bedding. Add a few sliced carrots, celery, lettuce or zucchini for food and then drop in some meal worms. They will cycle through to the bug form and will lay eggs in the bedding. The eggs hatch into tiny worms that grow to adults and then the cycle repeats itself.

The size varies weekly due to many factors. All of our mealworms are shipped fresh, never left over from one week to the next or packed days in advance. Some factors include weather, season, and amount ordered. The mealworms are always graded by size and should be of consistent size for the batch, not necessarily the same size weekly.
