While you technically can use MS Word as your text editor I really suggest that you don't. Use Notepad instead. Word tries to write HTML for you and will make a mess of your document. I don't recommend it until you are more familiar with using HTML code and tags and can recognize what is supposed to be there and what MS Word has coded in for you. It is supposed to be a feature, but it is not a particularly helpful one.

For those who are interested, there are PowerPoint slides on the MUTCD website that show the 1988 MUTCD text comparison with the 2000 MUTCD text. For the 2003 edition, there are PowerPoint slides that provide details and examples for the significant changes from the 2000 edition. GNU Emacs. GNU Emacs is an extensible, customisable, self-documenting text editor that has been in development since 1984. It was a rewrite of the original Emacs, which was written by the same author in 1976. So after almost thirty years of customisation and extention, it has reached a really advanced level of usefulness. I've been using GNU Emacs since sometime in the summer of 2002. Before that I used ViM for five years, but there are limits to how many things you can learn to do with ViM.

The WYSIWYG (pronounced "whiz-e-wig") text editor box appears in the VLE whenever text is added to any of the areas. A#4.5: Whichever one you want. Many editors work under GNO. Some of the more popular ones are emacs (MicroEMACS), vi (Stevie), ORCA/Editor, Edit-16, and Rose. Many of these editors cannot be suspended from the shell. Some have the "eating keystrokes" problem (see Q#14.1).
