D2_3DFX v1.02b has a known problem in which it will issue "Assertion Failures" at odd places in the game, resulting in you being kicked back out to DOS/Win95 without warning, and usually accompanied by a single-line error message. Please download v1.06b from the Patches Page to correct this problem. Note: Due to bugs in DOS4GW and in the original Descent2 code, the game may still crash, and it may leave your screen in an unusable state as a result.

If third party video codec packs are utilised you may experience problems with FMV playback.

You are probably using a patched demo of the game that is missing some of the resource files from the full game. Download and install missingres.exe from http://www.downloads.hardwar.info/ . The "FixVhID: Error" has also been reported to occur during games played with full installation. It is known to corrupt save games somehow, but there is no known way to recover such save games.

You have killed too many police enforcers - at least 80, although the precise number seems to vary. You could reload and see What is an enforcer and how do I get rid of one? above; or just enjoy the 'glory' of having destroyed the police.

It doesn't crash. The game just ends rather abruptly. There should be a screen that says "Game Over", but it tends not to display for more than a second.

My explanation for this confusion is simpler than my explanation of what an RPG is, so we'll start with that: some things are best defined by their boundaries, and some things are best defined by their centers. Gamers often prefer boundary-based definitions (game rules usually depend on them), but RPGs are a center-oriented topic, hence the interminable debate.

Answer: This seems to be attributable to dropping on a drop site that is not ready--usually because it is still processing the last drop. Furthermore, dropping on two or more tools at once before processing has completed for the initial drop may also cause crashes. It is important to wait for a drop to be completely processed (the watch cursor in the drop destination tool tells you it is processing) before doing another drop within ECCE.
