Authors and illustrators don’t get salaries like “regular business people”. We are paid royalties, which is a percentage of the publisher’s profits. So authors and illustrators are compensated based on how many books are sold, not how long it took to make the book in the first place. An author could work for a year or 10 years on a book, but it all comes down to how well it sells, which is yet another argument for doing your best work.

This ruling may seem somewhat unfair towards self-published creators, especially with today's improving desktop publishing technology. Unfortunately, CANSCAIP lacks the resources to individually assess a candidate's work. Authors don't get paid for "writing." They get paid when the publishers sells copies of their books. Usually an author receives ten percent of the price. So each time the publisher sells a twenty dollar book, you make two bucks. (The pecentage can go as high as 15 for hardback, and as low as 6 for paperback.) They do. They also get a small number of people to help with the early testing. This is called Alpha testing. There's no "right" way to become a writer or an illustrator. (All too often we're trying to match our insanely unrealistic expectations.) Everyone does it differently. Probably you're doing it right enough. If you want to write, write lots. Poetry. Letters. A journal. (I'm on journal number one hundred and ninety something -- they have their own special bookcase.) A myriad of things. I have a background in graphic design, so I have created logos, designed brochures and web sites, you name it. Some illustrators create greeting cards or design rubber stamps, prints for clothing/wrapping paper/wallpaper, or package illustrations.
