The short answer is that MAPI is an accepted standard for e-mail exchange, newer than the POP3 standard that is currently used by most ISPs. You can use the Win32::OLE module to create an instance of a MAPI session and send a message. In order for this to work, you must have messaging configured correctly on your machine.
