The "potting soil" you use can be homemade or commercially available. If you choose a commercial mix, there will generally be several choices available depending on the type of stock you are potting. Excellent crops are being grown in many media.

You can grow Paphs in any number of different types of potting mix; you can even grow some of them mounted if you have the right conditions, although this technique is not suggested for beginners. The basic needs are ample ability for holding air and water, ability to stabilize the plant, and not too high a salt retention capability.

Keep the bare root nursery stock out of sun, wind, and freezing temperatures. Boxed or baled nursery stock should be opened and watered. Close the package until ready to plant. Keep the stock in a cool, dry place that will not freeze (35 to 45 degrees is ideal). Stock delivered by combination load should be placed in a cool protected location. Cover the roots with straw or sawdust and water well. Then, cover everything with plastic to prevent roots from drying out. Water daily.

Almost any brand of peat based potting mix for containers or hanging plants will work. You’ll need 2 cubic feet (quarts) per box and 1 cup of dolomite or hydrated lime. Try to find potting mix without fertilizer already mixed in.

Answer: If you want to mix your own soil for your rose beds, the HRS recommends 1/3 soil, 1/3 sand and 1/3 compost. The goal is a rich organic soil that will drain well.

Container grown plants are removed from the pots with most of the soil removed and shipped, are bare root. All plant roots are treated with a moisture gel, "Terrasorb", and carefully packaged for delivery. Shipping charges are 25% (15% postage - 10% packaging) of the total order, unless you request plants to be shipped in the containers, which will greatly increase shipping cost.

In general, it is recommended that you have 60% of the pond surface covered with plants, this includes upright plants like iris and cattail as well as plants with floating leaves like waterlilies and true floaters like water lettuce and water hyacinth. Floating plants and plants with floating leaves help reduce algae by shading the water, and also using nutrients from the water for growth. Algae needs lots of sunlight and warmth to thrive.

Actually, there is one area we have had some difficulty with. The "sugar sands" of Florida are the most problematic surface condition that we have found. These are very loose, fine sands, which contain sparse roots of native grasses. The roots make it difficult to push down the Grazier sand points. Orchids like to be in free-draining material and chipped bark is the best substance. It has plenty of air spaces between the chips which allow the roots to dry out well inbetween the waterings which is just what the orchids like. As long as the compost contains a high proportion of bark then it should be fine for most orchids.

Line a plastic pot with burlap (allowing the 4 burlap ends to hang outside of the pot) before adding the soil mix. When sold, grasp the 4 corners of the burlap and pull up; the plant and soil mix will be removed from the pot with minimal root disturbance. The 4 corners can then be tied together forming a neat balled plant. This method is often used on trees or larger shrubs.

Many native plants, particularly those in the Proteaceae family such as Grevilleas, have adapted to nutrient poor Australian soils which are low in Phosphorus, and have the ability to supply themselves with their own Phosphorus. Planting these plants in garden mix, which supplies additional phosphorus, can be toxic. Native 'Low P' Mix is a purpose designed garden mix, low in phosphorus, for all native plants.
