To maintain proper humidification in your humidor, moisten the humidifier (humistat) - a sponge type of material in a vented case which mounts to some part of the humidor (usually the lid) - initially with a 50/50 mixture of 50% distilled water and 50% PG (propylene glycol) then monthly or as needed with distilled water.

The ideal is 50% in the plant canopy, any higher and your plants run the risk of diseases such as grey mould (see 40). If the humidity is considerably higher than the outside humidity then you probably haven’t got enough ventilation (see 34). Pour out some perlite into a large colander (beware, perlite is dusty). Thoroughly wet the perlite then shake out the excess water. Dump the damp perlite into the fruiting chamber. Starting from the inside of the box, look for details liked perfectly squared and fitted seams. Gaps provide an exit for moisture. Spanish cedar is the best wood for the interior of a humidor (see section on woods below) and it should be unfinished. There should be an "inner lip" protruding from the top of the side above in to the lid to help prevent the exchange of moisture.
